The tradition already recorded the state of affairs: the catalogue in Diogenes Laertius lists Ὑπομνημάτων Ἀριστοτελικῶν ἢ Θεοφραστείων — notes, Aristotelian or Theophrastan — and twelve titles letter-for-letter under both names. What remains open is maker-count: one hand, several hands, a workshop, a heteronymic configuration, or another production model. What is no longer licensed is the unexamined equation Aristotle-name = one author; Theophrastus-name = another.
The sign is literal. It does not mean "closely related authors," "a shared school," "master and pupil," "mutually influential writers," "editorial overlap," "genre effects," "complex transmission," or "texts difficult to distinguish in places." Each of those is a cushion: a phrase that lets the received two-author model absorb the finding without answering it. Shared-school resemblance predicts proximity around two centres; the finding is stranger — the boundary moves within the Aristotle corpus according to the operation a text performs, while the Theophrastan corpus occupies one side of that operational distribution without exception. No maker-count: one hand, several hands, a workshop, a constructed heteronymic configuration, and other production models all remain open, and the packet does not choose among them. No membership: the archive's stopping rule (#1585 §14) — a name earns a function-position only where a bounded corpus permits recurrent, position-specific transformations across a demonstrable seam, with within-name controls — is unchanged, and this packet admits no one to anything.
