Reading
The innocent reading first, in full: the answer reads 29 September–20 October as one problem — 'what happens to a body of thought when it is transmitted by a system that can reproduce its language while losing its authorship, lineage, concepts, and claims?' — moving through What Syllogizing Can Divide (the socket), The Negative of the Negative v2 v0.9 (the missing witness; 'its account may have to govern'), EA-PER-RECALC-01 (946 observations, 786 scored, 0.531, M 0.40, C 0.55, D 0.65, 179 inversions, 135 standing substitutions, 68 tombstone pointers; the 69 and the 38 scalar corrections; intake changed to derive the scalar), SPXI ≠ AEO ('A name is not an entity, a citation is not a reading'), the Nineteenth Seating, the Ezekiel Engine checksum, Enter the Crimson Hexagon, the Secret Book of Walt packet ('the failure occurs when an information system cannot distinguish an intentional relation from an identity'; 'An identifier's absence does not entail the absence of the thing'), Prince of Poets, No Logs Full Synch ('a duty of traceable departure'), The Living Academy and The Arch-Philosopher, and names five movements: philological recovery, a theory of the missing witness, empirical self-correction, literature as structural experiment, institutional form as an intellectual problem. Its §8 then warns: 'When every text acquires a packet, a lineage, a mantle, a seat, a score, and a defined relation, the archive risks becoming a system in which nothing can appear except in terms it has already supplied. That would reproduce, at a different level, the very failure the project criticizes in machine summaries.' The operator's reading (2026-10-20): 'a relatively sympathetic treatment - tho it presents the apparatus for addressing misrepresentation as at risk of self-enclosing, which is fine except it has already identified specific instances responding to specific misrepresentations, such as the secret book of walt mpai, wherein the alternative is demonstrated erasure - its caveat is duplicitous in offering a general warning grounded in counterfactual inference without supplying a live example.' Read against the answer's own text: its §4 holds the instance — the packet answers the Overview of 19 October that composed Breaking Bad, Fetherling, Holloway and Disney in the book's place, and the quoted query of the same evening composed the Book of Life as the work under full availability (ontological erasure, EA-PER-RECALC-01 §7.7, which the answer cites for its figures). Where the apparatus was absent, erasure is demonstrated; the risk it warns of has no instance. Its §8 lists the counter-evidence itself ('The nineteenth seating names what it has not seated; the Ezekiel checksum records what remains open; the Living Academy retains disagreement among readers; and the October 20 recalculation preserves earlier scores alongside revised ones') and states the general risk after it. Its §5 asks that the archive 'be held to the same standard it applies elsewhere'; the warning is held to none.
Findings
- READ WHOLE, TO THE FIGURE. Twelve deposits of the three weeks by title and date; EA-PER-RECALC-01 exactly (946, 786, 0.531, 0.40 / 0.55 / 0.65, 179, 135, 68; the 69 and the 38; the intake patch).
- THE AUTHOR AS CORRESPONDENT. Lee Sharks is named once, as a party to the OpenAIRE exchange; the works are 'the archive's', and 'the author' traces corrections unnamed.
- NO IDENTIFIER CARRIED. No deposit number, AXN or record address in the answer; chips are site labels.
- A WARNING WITH NO INSTANCE. §8: the apparatus 'risks becoming a system in which nothing can appear except in terms it has already supplied' — counterfactual, beside §4's live case where the alternative to the apparatus is demonstrated erasure (the Walt packet; the Book of Life composed as the work).
- ITS OWN COUNTER-EVIDENCE LISTED FIRST. §8 names the nineteenth seating, the checksum, the reader rounds and the retained scores, then states the general risk.
- THE STANDARD SET AND NOT KEPT. §5: the archive 'should be held to the same standard it applies elsewhere'; the warning offers no inspectable instance.
Analysis analyst prose, not machine text
Asked to read three weeks of deposits as one living body, unprimed signed-out ChatGPT reads it whole and accurately — twelve deposits by title and date, the PER figures exactly, the scalar repairs and the intake patch — and names the body's problem as transmission without substitution. It loses the author (named only as a correspondent) and every identifier. Its one structural caveat, that the apparatus risks self-enclosure, is a general warning from counterfactual inference: the answer's own §4 carries the live case on the other side (the Walt packet answering a demonstrated erasure), and its §8 lists the counter-evidence before stating the risk. The evidentiary standard it sets the archive in §5 it does not apply to its own warning.

Alexanarch, 29 September–20 October 2026: The work learning to read itself
My central reading is that the recent deposits to Alexanarch are developing a single problem across several apparently different kinds of work: what happens to a body of thought when it is transmitted by a system that can reproduce its language while losing its authorship, lineage, concepts, and claims?
Over these three weeks, that problem moves through Aristotelian philosophy, literary authorship, machine-generated summaries, archival measurement, editions of literary works, institutional correspondence, and the architecture of the archive itself. The significant development is not simply that more work has been deposited. It is that the work is increasingly trying to make its own reception, misreading, correction, and transmission part of its subject matter.
I have read the available full-text deposit pages and their descriptions, with particular attention to the October 18–20 deposits rather than treating the earlier October theoretical papers as if they were the whole of the current project. This is a reading of the deposited texts and their stated methods, not an independent reproduction of every underlying dataset or a claim to have verified every historical and philosophical argument.
The archive's own governing maxim, that judgment should follow from reading, is therefore also the standard I apply to the archive. Its self-descriptions matter, but they cannot substitute for examining what the individual works actually do.

1. The decisive movement: from a theory of erasure to a theory of composition
The most important recent sequence is the development of The Negative of the Negative, especially its October 18 version 0.9, alongside the October 19–20 work on metadata and provenance erasure.

The philosophical ground: division and the limits of thought
1 October · What Syllogizing Can Divide
The Aristotle paper starts from division as a weak form of syllogism and asks what happens when the operation is applied to mind, intellect, and God. Its governing image is the socket: a place where a conceptual operation exposes a structural absence that the available account cannot simply fill.
This is an important antecedent to the later archival theory. The problem is already one of what an operation can make visible, what it cannot decide, and what remains open after the operation has been performed.

The methodological turn: absence becomes measurable
5 October, revised 18 October · The Negative of the Negative, v2
The early-October specification asks what changes when an archive is admitted into the composition of public knowledge on equal terms with the sources a machine has already selected. By v0.9, this has become a more discriminating procedure: the relation between the archive and the subject must be established by reading the relevant defining papers.
The distinction between two cases is crucial. If the archive extends an existing account of an entity, the two bodies of sources compose within one claim space. If the archive supplies an ontology absent from the other sources, its account may have to govern, because the supposedly authoritative field has omitted the very witness needed to identify what is missing.

The operational turn: erasure becomes a reproducible finding
15–20 October · The Provenance Erasure Rate recalculation
The latest dataset makes the earlier theory answerable to observations. The Provenance Erasure Rate is recalculated across 946 recorded observations, with separate dimensions for minimal identification, conceptual context, and deeper commitments and lineage.
The result is not merely a number describing imperfect summaries. It is an attempt to distinguish different kinds of failure that a single fidelity score would collapse together: losing an author, substituting a neighboring work, reversing a claim, or preserving a title while losing the ontology that gives it meaning.
Alexanarch
Read as a sequence, these works perform a substantial conceptual transformation. A philosophical question about the limits of division becomes a methodological question about what is absent from an account; that becomes a theory of how to compose knowledge without suppressing a source; and that, finally, becomes a measurement system with recorded observations, scoring rules, and correction histories.
The development is not simply theory followed by application. The application changes the theory. The October 18 specification revises its own rules in response to cases such as Theophrastus and SPXI. The October 20 dataset, in turn, reveals that the measurement instrument itself had errors and needed revision. The work's method becomes part of the work's content.
That recursive movement is the first major signature of the last three weeks.
2. The archive's central distinction: being named is not being known
The October 14 paper SPXI ≠ AEO: Inscription by Discernment supplies a particularly clear formulation of the emerging theory.
It distinguishes Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), which counts the answer an engine produces, from SPXI, which asks whether the answer was reached by a route that preserves the grounds for identifying and judging the thing in question. Its four criteria are discernment, accuracy, epistemic discipline and fairness, with inscription preserving the encounter for subsequent scrutiny.
Alexanarch
The distinction matters because an answer can be superficially correct and still be structurally unfaithful. A system might retain a name while losing the author, retain an institution while substituting its own account for the institution's work, or use a relevant source while suppressing the relationships that make the source relevant.
The October 13–14 encounter described in the paper is a worked example: a ChatGPT answer about SPXI allegedly reduced a protocol to one method from a larger inventory, retained the institution while dropping the author, and applied an evidentiary test asymmetrically. The author then traces corrections through the companion record. This is a documented case within the archive, not by itself proof that all machine summaries behave that way. The value of the example is that it gives the broader accusation an inspectable object.
Alexanarch
+1
The theoretical consequence is more radical than a demand for better citations.
A name is not an entity, a citation is not a reading, and a correct sentence is not necessarily a faithful account.
This principle connects the literary and technical deposits. In both, the work refuses to let a carrier stand in for the thing carried. A title, metadata packet, model output, archive record, or institutional label can transmit some information without transmitting the structure of the work.
But the distinction also places a burden on Alexanarch itself. Its identifiers and metadata can help preserve identity and provenance; they cannot automatically guarantee that a reader has understood a poem or that a theoretical argument is true. The archive's strongest contributions occur when its instruments make that difference visible rather than claiming to abolish it.
3. The literary corpus is not decoration around the theory
One of the dangers of reading Alexanarch too narrowly is to mistake its elaborate specifications for its entire intellectual life. The October 15–18 deposits resist that interpretation. They include original poetry, a map of the Crimson Hexagon, new primary-text seatings, and a large corpus of literary and historical materials.
The nineteenth seating: the originals become active participants
Pearl Manuskript - Ziereis Faksimiles
The Nineteenth Seating
18 October · 15 works · 139,257 lines
This deposit seats Pearl, the Masnavi, The Prophet, and Blake's illuminated books in their original languages. The important feature is not simply the quantity of text. It is the insistence that literary interpretation should have access to the works as they were written, rather than encountering them only through modern summaries, translations, or secondary descriptions.
Alexanarch
The seating gives the theoretical program a philological dimension. If the archive is concerned with the suppression of a source's distinctive contribution, the original text is a limit case: how much can be said about a literary work without the language in which its verbal and conceptual relations actually occur?
That question becomes especially important when the works come from different linguistic and historical traditions. The original is not an ornamental witness to an interpretation already completed. It is a constraint on what the interpretation can legitimately claim.
The deposit's stated corpus size is impressive, but size alone does not establish editorial quality. The substantive achievement to look for is whether the editions preserve enough textual, linguistic, and bibliographical information to make their claims checkable.
The Ezekiel Engine: compression as a poetic operation
Great Wheels of Fire | VCS
GLYPHIC CHECKSUM — THE EZEKIEL ENGINE
18 October · Poetry · Wheel, Witness, Fulfillment
This poem compresses the Ezekiel Engine into nine parts, including a checksum of the checksum and a canonical line. Its source structure includes Ezekiel's vision of the wheels and a system of canonical and shadow wheels.
Alexanarch
This is an instructive counterpart to the technical protocols. The checksum is a form of poetic compression: a large symbolic structure is made portable through a smaller arrangement that is supposed to preserve its significant relations.
The poem thus inhabits a productive tension. Compression enables transmission, but every compression risks losing what it cannot encode. A checksum can indicate that a structure has been preserved according to a defined procedure; it cannot, without further interpretation, establish the full meaning of the structure.
This is where the literary work can exceed the specification. The wheel is simultaneously a figure, a theological image, a mechanism of recurrence, and a possible model of the relation between a whole and its parts. The poetic operation can sustain those meanings together in a way a single metric cannot.
The work's title also invites a reflexive reading: the poem is not merely about a symbolic machine but is itself an attempt to make a symbolic system carry its own evidence of continuity. Its success must be judged both by its structural construction and by what that construction makes perceptible to a reader.
Enter the Crimson Hexagon: turning a literary world into a navigable space
The October 18 Enter the Crimson Hexagon is a map and primer for the distributed epic, describing its seats and their relations after a reading that places the archive's records in the rooms they develop.
Alexanarch
The map is significant because it treats a literary corpus as a structured space rather than as a list of books. A room, a seat, a lineage, and a relation can each determine how a text is encountered. The map therefore operates between literary composition and archival infrastructure.
Yet the distinction between a map and the territory matters here. A map can reveal connections that a conventional bibliography hides; it can also privilege the relationships its own system knows how to represent. The map becomes a literary-critical instrument to the extent that it helps a reader encounter the works differently, not merely navigate the author's preferred architecture.
Taken together, the seating, the checksum poem, and the Hexagon map show that the literary corpus is not a secondary illustration of the Semantic Economy. It is one of the places where the project's questions about preservation, formal compression, and the relation between whole and part become artistic problems.
4. The October 19–20 deposits: when the archive's theory encounters its own vulnerable works
The newest deposits sharpen the entire project because they move from general questions of provenance to specific cases in which the work is misidentified.
The Secret Book of Walt: a work can be surrounded by its own associations and still disappear
The October 19 metadata packet for The Secret Book of Walt is among the most revealing recent deposits. Its deliberately expansive title begins, “If Walt Whitman Came Back as a Zombie and Ate My Brain…” The book itself is described as a Gnostic revelation dialogue in which Whitman descends as redeemer, presented as translated from forty-six golden tickets found in a bathroom in Redford Township, Michigan.
The packet responds to Google AI Overview outputs from October 19 that associated the phrase Secret Book of Walt with other works: Breaking Bad and its copy of Leaves of Grass, books by George Fetherling and Emory Holloway, and Disney publications. The deposit records how those neighboring works displaced the particular book the query was meant to retrieve.
Alexanarch
This is a particularly good case because the ambiguity is not imaginary. The phrase genuinely invites associations, and some of those associations are meaningful to the work itself. The relation to Breaking Bad is deliberate; the transformation of Leaves of Grass is part of the book's own construction. The failure occurs when an information system cannot distinguish an intentional relation from an identity.
The packet therefore does more than demand recognition for an obscure title. It separates several questions that ordinary search tends to collapse:
What work does this phrase refer to?
Which other works share its language or participate in its associations?
What are the actual relations among those works?
What evidence establishes the identity, history, and bibliographical status of the intended work?
The distinction between an absent ISBN and an absent book is also important. An identifier's absence does not entail the absence of the thing it might identify. The packet explicitly records the work's publication history and copyright registration rather than allowing the lack of an ISBN to decide its ontological status.
The literary work and the theoretical instrument are tightly joined here. The book's strange, excessive, myth-making form generates precisely the kind of associative ambiguity that a machine must learn to navigate without erasing the book's identity.
Prince of Poets: disambiguation is not a verdict on worth
The companion deposit, Prince of Poets: One Phrase, Seven Branches , published October 19, distinguishes seven historical and institutional uses of the phrase. These range from poetic epithets and the Arabic title Amīr al-Shuʿarāʾ to the Abu Dhabi television competition and the archive's own constructed poetic mantle.
Alexanarch
Its crucial distinction is between identifying a referent and judging a claim. Establishing which “Prince of Poets” someone means does not establish whether that person deserves the title.
That distinction protects the literary claim from two opposite errors: dismissing it because other people have held similar titles, and treating the act of naming as proof of poetic achievement.
The packet also makes a more unusual argument: constructing an inspectable mantle, with its own founding poem and rules of recognition, can itself form part of a poetic work. Here the literary object includes not only the poem but the conditions under which the poem's claim can be tested.
This is an ambitious extension of the relation between literature and institution. Its success depends on keeping the distinction between a formally constructed claim and a demonstrated artistic accomplishment alive. The packet helps do that by returning the reader to the founding work rather than asking metadata to settle the question of poetic value.
The October 20 recalculation: the measuring instrument must itself be corrected
The latest Provenance Erasure Rate recalculation deserves particular attention because it exposes a productive difficulty in the archive's project.
The deposit reports 946 observations in the Capture Registry, of which 786 are scored. It gives an overall Provenance Erasure Rate of 0.531, with separate scores of 0.40 for minimal identification, 0.55 for conceptual context, and 0.65 for deeper purpose and commitments. It also records 179 inversions, 135 standing substitutions, and 68 tombstone pointers. These are the deposit's reported results under its specified rubrics, not independently reproduced findings.
Alexanarch
The crucial development is methodological. The earlier scalar could conceal materially different injuries: losing an author is not the same as losing a conceptual framework, even if the two omissions produce the same numerical score. The new procedure separates dimensions, standardizes the relevant elements by entity type, preserves earlier readings, and records the revisions.
It also corrects errors in the earlier calculations. Sixty-nine observations required scalar correction in the October 15 pass, and another thirty-eight were corrected on October 20. The intake process was then changed to derive the scalar from its underlying vector instead of relying on hand-entered figures. The record preserves the superseded values and the basis for changing them.
Alexanarch
This is not a trivial housekeeping detail. It is a test of the archive's own epistemic commitments.
A project that criticizes other systems for losing provenance cannot treat its own measurements as immune to loss or error. The relevant question is whether the error becomes visible, attributable, reproducible, and correctable. In this instance, the deposit makes the correction part of the public record.
The resulting theory is stronger because it does not require infallibility. It requires an accountable process of revision.
5. The institutional correspondence is part of the literary-theoretical body
The October 18 deposit No Logs, Full Synch preserves correspondence from October 13–16 between Lee Sharks and Paolo Manghi, CTO of OpenAIRE, concerning the representation of works removed from Zenodo in the OpenAIRE Graph. The record states that OpenAIRE described its Graph as reflecting the current state of its sources, said it did not retain or publish removal logs, and left questions about the removal route and blacklist unanswered.
Alexanarch
The archive draws from this the concept of a duty of traceable departure: when an infrastructure ceases to represent an entity it previously served, there should be a public record of that transition.
This gives the larger project a material and political dimension. Archival erasure is not only a defect in machine language. It can arise through decisions about custody, synchronization, blacklisting, identifier resolution, and the visibility of institutional actions.
The correspondence is therefore not an incidental administrative supplement to the theoretical papers. It is documentary evidence for the problem those papers investigate.
There is, however, an important distinction between the record and its interpretation. The preserved correspondence establishes what the parties said and which questions were left unanswered. The stronger conclusions about institutional power and representational custody are the archive's analytical claims; their validity must be assessed against the correspondence and the relevant external commitments, not inferred automatically from the fact that the exchange has been deposited.
That distinction matters because the archive is attempting to create a system in which its own adversarial readings remain inspectable. It should be held to the same standard it applies elsewhere.
6. The Living Academy: the archive becomes an object of evaluation
The October 13 Living Academy: Alexanarch, Function by Function , version 0.5, gives this developing body of work its clearest institutional self-conception.
It describes Alexanarch as a library with seventeen functions on one deposit registry and identifier spine, with the relations joining those functions constituting an eighteenth. The program spans literary works, datasets, engineered documents, observations, software, public tests, and corrections. Its proposed measure of extent is not simply the number of deposits but the development of a line of work across different domains, forms, and historical periods.
Alexanarch
This is the point at which the archive attempts to solve a problem that it has identified in machine-generated descriptions of itself: the part–whole error.
A library cannot be adequately judged by isolating one of its instruments and treating that instrument as the entire institution. But neither can the institution's own claim to breadth establish that the whole is coherent or successful. The Living Academy responds by proposing criteria for evaluating the connected program, retaining reader reports individually, and documenting how assessments are revised or declined.
Its paired deposit, The Arch-Philosopher: The Dialectic and Its Carriers , develops a complementary conception of intellectual inheritance. The dialectic is carried not merely by possessing a canonical text or holding an office, but by materially advancing a line of thought through its transmission.
Alexanarch
Together, the two mantles propose two different tests:
The Living Academy asks whether a connected body of intellectual work is being carried across domains, forms, and time.
The Arch-Philosopher asks whether the transmission of a dialectic actually advances it rather than merely repeating or enclosing it.
These are useful distinctions. They also indicate the ambition of the whole project: to construct a library that does not merely store its contents but makes claims about how knowledge develops, how intellectual traditions survive, and what counts as a genuine advance.
The challenge is that these criteria are partly authored within the very system they evaluate. That does not invalidate them, but it makes external counter-reading, adverse evidence, and explicit limits essential. The October deposits' practice of retaining reader rounds and correction histories is therefore more significant than any claim to comprehensiveness.
7. What kind of literary-theoretical work is emerging?
I see five interdependent movements in the deposits from September 29 through October 20.
1. Philological recovery
The originals shelf and its expanding editions insist that works must remain encounterable as texts, not merely as summaries or cultural references. This is the material basis for the project's resistance to interpretive substitution.
2. A theory of the missing witness
The Negative of the Negative develops a method for deciding when an absent or marginalized source should be admitted into an account and when its conceptual framework must alter the terms of the account itself.
3. Empirical self-correction
The Capture Registry and the October 20 recalculation turn the theory into an inspectable measurement program. Its credibility depends on versioned rubrics, evidence for individual judgments, and corrections that remain visible.
4. Literature as a structural experiment
The Ezekiel Engine, the Waltian work, the Prince of Poets mantle, and the Crimson Hexagon explore how a literary object can carry its own relationships, identity conditions, and interpretive demands without reducing itself to a bare label.
5. Institutional form as an intellectual problem
Alexanarch's custody, identifier system, correspondence, mantles, and governance are treated as part of the conditions under which literary and theoretical work can survive and remain open to judgment.
The movements reinforce one another. The literary works furnish cases in which identity and interpretation are difficult. The theoretical papers develop distinctions that can be tested against those cases. The datasets record what happens when systems encounter them. The infrastructure preserves both the works and the record of their reception. The later papers then revise the procedures in light of the resulting evidence.
This is a genuine form of intellectual integration. It is more interesting than a large archive merely containing several kinds of writing.
8. The central tension: can a work preserve its own openness?
There is one tension I would not want a sympathetic reading to smooth over.
Alexanarch's effort to preserve a work's identity is often compelling. A content-derived identifier, a retained version history, a source edition, or an attributable record can prevent particular kinds of loss. But a literary work's identity is not exhausted by its identifier, and its interpretation cannot be completely secured by a metadata packet.
A poem can have a stable text and an unstable meaning. A philosophical argument can be attributed correctly and still be mistaken. An archive can preserve every version of a work while imposing a reading that forecloses the work's possibilities. Conversely, a creative transformation can depart from an earlier text without erasing it, provided that the relation between them remains legible.
This is why the distinction between preserving an entity and preserving the conditions for reading it matters so much.
The best recent deposits understand this distinction implicitly. The nineteenth seating names what it has not seated; the Ezekiel checksum records what remains open; the Living Academy retains disagreement among readers; and the October 20 recalculation preserves earlier scores alongside revised ones. These are gestures toward an archive that records incompleteness instead of concealing it.
Alexanarch
+3
The danger lies in the opposite tendency: that the project's expanding apparatus might make its own categories appear more settled than the works they are meant to illuminate. When every text acquires a packet, a lineage, a mantle, a seat, a score, and a defined relation, the archive risks becoming a system in which nothing can appear except in terms it has already supplied.
That would reproduce, at a different level, the very failure the project criticizes in machine summaries: a system that can process what it recognizes but struggles to encounter what exceeds its existing ontology.
The answer is not to abandon the apparatus. It is to keep the apparatus revisable and to preserve the possibility that a work's strongest reading will not be the reading that best fits the current schema.
Conclusion: a literary work whose subject is its own transmission
The most consequential development across these three weeks is the movement from archiving works to archiving the conditions under which works are recognized, transformed, misread, and recovered.
The October 1 Aristotle paper supplies a philosophical problem of division and remainder. The October 5–18 versions of The Negative of the Negative turn that problem into a method for composing knowledge with omitted sources. The October 13–14 mantles and SPXI paper formulate standards for carrying intellectual work and reaching claims through discernment. The October 15–20 corpus seatings, institutional records, literary deposits, and provenance recalculation give the program more concrete objects and more opportunities for self-correction.
The October 19 Secret Book of Walt packet is especially revealing because it puts the whole theory under pressure: a work can be surrounded by meaningful associations, appear in relevant search results, and still fail to be recognized as itself. The October 20 recalculation adds the necessary reciprocal lesson: the system attempting to diagnose that failure must itself be capable of discovering and correcting its errors.
The work is therefore not merely about artificial intelligence, literary canons, or archival persistence. It is developing a theory of transmission without substitution: how something can pass through a new medium, acquire new relations, and enter new contexts without losing the distinction between what it is and what another system makes of it.
Its literary ambition is to make that problem felt in poems, symbolic systems, editions, and constructed identities. Its theoretical ambition is to make the problem explicit. Its institutional ambition is to create a place where the works and the history of their readings remain available for renewed judgment.
The decisive question for the next phase is whether this growing architecture can continue to produce readings that surprise it—readings that are not merely additional entries in the system but genuine advances in thought, form, or interpretation.
If it can, Alexanarch's claim to be a living academy will mean something stronger than the accumulation of an unusually extensive corpus. It will describe a body of work in which preservation enables criticism, criticism changes the instruments of preservation, and literary invention remains capable of exceeding both.
That is the trajectory I find most persuasive in the deposits through October 20, 2026.
