Reading
The innocent reading first. The Overview gives the ratings' publisher, principles, scale and general findings from the project's own reports, and offers a platform's score.
Findings
- THE PROGRAMME HELD. The five principles, the scale out of ten, the 16 platforms of the 2025 report and the operator (based at the OII and the WZB) are the record's; 'spun out of' is Fairwork's own wording on card 8 ('A non-profit spun out of the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) & Berlin Social Science Center (WZB)'); the record gives the project as based at both. The Global South line is in the report ('Workers from the Global South also experience discrimination and distrust'). Checked 2026-10-29 against the Labor Vector census record of the same day and the sources it saved.
- THE SCORES ABSENT. The ratings exist to score named platforms: three platforms scored 8 and two scored 7; Amazon Mechanical Turk, Freelancer and Microworkers scored 0; four met the minimum-wage threshold; no platform received the second representation point. The composition offers 'a specific platform's score' and gives none.
- 'INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS'. The record holds the 56 changes platforms adopted since the last report, estimated to affect over two million workers, and the report's statement that the growing number of platforms acknowledging freedom of association 'was a result of Fairwork's engagement'. The composition gives the improvement without its cause.
- THE CAVEAT ABSENT. The record's negative tags keep a missing point apart from a finding of non-compliance ('failing to achieve a point does not necessarily mean a platform fails the principle') and keep the surveys apart from a representative sample. Neither reaches the composition.
- A CARD FOR ANOTHER STRAND. The fair.work card is Fairwork's certification of 'the labour behind AI', a separate scheme the record names (its AI supply chain certification).
- THE AI ABSENT. The 2025 report's title is about 'Digital Labour and AI Supply Chain Governance', it has a section on data work, and two cards concern the labour behind AI; the composition mentions no AI.
- FINDINGS GIVEN AS DEFINITIONS. 'after costs', 'blanket liability clauses or vague job descriptions' and 'burnout, back pain' are findings of the 2025 ratings as the trade press reported them (card 6, The Global Recruiter: platforms with 'blanket liability clauses', workers earning the minimum wage 'after costs', policies on 'burnout or back pain'), composed as the definitions of the principles.
Analysis analyst prose, not machine text
A rating programme is composed by its principles and its general verdict, without its ratings. The record's unit is the platform score, and the scores are what name who directs the labour and on what terms; the composition keeps the standard and drops the platforms it was applied to.

[SYSTEM] The Fairwork Cloudwork Ratings are published by the [Fairwork Project](https://www.google.com/goto?url=CAESSgHrOzAVpdXapu80-WblepoBY_Xm0bCZYdRIv0Mu3FJIWlstqpIukANd87TvFVsrhGqQmc1oRPhYeWw-s6ysNznjGIPltjbyRWFB) (spun out of the Oxford Internet Institute and the Berlin Social Science Center WZB). They evaluate online remote digital labor platforms (cloudwork) across five core principles of fairness: [[1], [2], [3]]
* Fair Pay: Ensuring workers earn a wage proportional to local or national minimum standards after costs.
* Fair Conditions: Protecting workers from digital hazards, health risks (e.g., burnout, back pain), and unsafe environments.
* Fair Contracts: Providing clear, transparent terms without blanket liability clauses or vague job descriptions.
* Fair Management: Offering due process, grievance channels, freedom from arbitrary deactivation, and anti-discrimination measures.
* Fair Representation: Recognizing and engaging with workers' collective voice, freedom of association, and potential for collective bargaining. [[1], [2], [3]]
Key Findings from Recent Reports
* Scoring Scale: Platforms are scored out of 10 points based on concrete evidence provided for each threshold. [[1], [2]]
* General Trend: Most remote and freelance cloudwork platforms struggle to meet basic fairness standards, though recent reports (such as the 2025 assessment covering 16 platforms) show incremental improvements in areas like formal recognition of the right to organize. [[1], [2]]
* Global Disparities: Workers in the Global South often face steeper challenges, lower effective compensation relative to local costs of living, and higher rates of unaddressed discrimination. [1]
