"Catalogues and Wills" is a groundwork note by Lee Sharks (v0.3, 6 September 2026) that establishes relations among the texts carrying the custody, enumeration and route of the Aristotelian and Theophrastan books, without reading them: the four Peripatetic wills preserved by Diogenes Laertius (Aristotle, Theophrastus, Strato, Lycon), the two catalogues attached to the lives of Aristotle and Theophrastus with their line-totals (445,270 and 232,808 στίχοι), Strabo XIII.1.54, Plutarch Sulla 26, Diogenes V.38 and Epistle VI. Its operations are counts, positions, co-occurrences and verbatim clauses. Among the relations it records: the will of Aristotle names no book, library, school or successor; Theophrastus's will gives all the books to one person, Neleus, and the garden, peripatos and houses to ten named friends in common as a sanctuary, under a prohibition on alienation, in adjacent clauses; Strato's will leaves Lycon all the books except those we ourselves have written; Lycon's separates books read from books unpublished and orders the latter published; the Theophrastan catalogue runs the alphabet twice before an unordered tail, contains nine internal doublets, shares twelve titles letter-for-letter with Aristotle's, and carries the entry Ὑπομνημάτων Ἀριστοτελικῶν ἢ Θεοφραστείων; Strabo narrates the custody with παρέδωκεν three times and asserts a first link the will lacks; Plutarch names Andronicus's act as drawing up the πίνακες now in circulation. The extant corpora are counted from the open Greek editions and set against the catalogued totals as two acts rather than as a loss ratio.
