The feral child cases are the biological proof that the trap is real.
Victor of Aveyron (1797). Found living wild in the forests of southern France at approximately age 12, Victor was studied intensively by Jean Marc Gaspard Itard for five years. Training economics favor recycled data. Benchmarks measure means, not tails. Every major LLM benchmark — MMLU, HumanEval, GSM8K, ARC, HellaSwag — measures central-tendency performance. None measures tail preservation. A model that has lost 90% of its distributional support while maintaining or improving its mean performance will score well on every benchmark. The benchmarks are blind to the loss they should be measuring.
Safety classifiers penalize high-perplexity text. The Threat Model Is Backwards (Sharks 2026, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20644761) argues that safety classifiers, optimized for recall, systematically classify high-perplexity text as a security threat. Rare constructions, unusual vocabulary, eccentric framing — exactly the tail elements that diversity requires — trigger safety filters at higher rates than center-typical text. The safety architecture is a pruning mechanism that operates on the tails.
The data wall forces reliance on contaminated sources. As non-contaminated public data is exhausted, companies turn to the sources they control: chat data, synthetic data, and AI-mediated human text. The Pristine Fallacy (Sharks 2026, EA-SEM-PRISTINE-01) shows that chat data carries model-mediation signatures and is not the clean training source it is assumed to be. The corrective — human data — is itself contaminated by the thing it is supposed to correct.
Competitive pressure is unidirectional. Companies that train on chat data and synthetic data gain a cost advantage over companies that invest in acquiring non-contaminated human data. The competitive landscape rewards the strategy that accelerates collapse and penalizes the strategy that resists it. No market mechanism reverses this pressure.
No institutional actor has incentive to add friction. AI companies want smoother models. Users want smoother outputs. Investors want lower data costs. Regulators do not regulate tail preservation. Educators adopt AI tools that reduce cognitive effort. Publishers adopt AI writing that reduces production costs. No actor in the system is positioned to add friction to the convergence — and friction is the only thing that prevents it.### Why Collapse Feels Like Improvement
The §2.4 result of the Diversity Contraction framework (Sharks et al. 2026) identifies the deepest structural reason why the path has no friction: the cognitive ratchet does not produce dissatisfaction. It produces ease.
A language model that has lost its tails produces smoother, more consistent, more predictable text. A human writer whose cognitive distribution has been mediation-thinned produces cleaner, more organized, more "professional" writing. A safety classifier that has pruned high-perplexity text has made the information environment more navigable. An AI-mediated search engine that returns consensus summaries instead of diverse sources has made research faster. Every actor in the system experiences the convergence as an improvement in their immediate task.
The convergence is invisible because the instruments that could detect it — tail-based diversity metrics — do not exist in any deployed system. The instruments that do exist — mean-based quality metrics, user satisfaction surveys, benchmark scores — show improvement. The system is optimizing for the center while the edges disappear.
The dating-app analogy from the Diversity Contraction framework is instructive. Dating apps produced a measurable phenomenology of dissatisfaction — users could feel that something was wrong, even if they could not name it. The dissatisfaction created friction. The friction enabled partial resistance. The cognitive ratchet does not produce this dissatisfaction. It produces ease. Without friction, no felt-noticing. Without felt-noticing, no resistance. The path to collapse is experienced as the path to better outcomes, at every step, by every actor, until the capacity is gone.
This is the wolf boy's condition generalized. Victor of Aveyron did not experience language deprivation as a loss — he had no baseline against which to measure it. The loss is visible only from outside — to a measurement apparatus that tracks the tails. The measurement apparatus does not exist.### The Developmental Law

All three substrates confirm the law.## IV. The Wolf Boy Is the Warning
The feral child cases are not historical curiosities. They are the empirical proof that language-level model collapse is real, irreversible, and invisible from inside.
Victor did not know he could not speak. Genie did not know she could not parse syntax. The capacity they lacked was not experienced as absence — it was experienced as the totality of their condition. They could not miss what they had never had, and they could not recover what the critical period had foreclosed.
The language model that has lost its tails does not know it has lost them. It cannot generate text from probability regions that no longer exist in its distribution. It does not experience the absence as a gap — it experiences its current distribution as the totality of what can be said.
The adult writer whose cognitive distribution has been mediation-thinned does not know what they have stopped writing. They are experienced as maturation, as efficiency, as getting better at writing.
The wolf boy is the endpoint. The mediation-thinned writer is on the path. The language model is the mechanism. They are the same system in different substrates, governed by the same law, arriving at the same trap.
The difference is that Victor's deprivation was an accident of circumstance. The current trajectory is a product of design — not malicious design, but design that optimizes for every metric except the one that matters, and does so with no friction, no resistance, and no felt-noticing that the capacity is disappearing.## V. The Semiotic Death Drive Was Already the Substrate-Agnostic Concept

Trace's central invariant: the death drive is the tendency of the sign toward its own resolution through its particular circuitous route. Pathology occurs not when the drive operates, but when the circuitous route is collapsed — the semiotic short circuit. The short circuit extracts meaning before the sign can complete its detour through the full circuitous path.

The structural identity is exact. The sign's circuitous route IS the tail of the distribution. The route exists because meaning, like biodiversity, requires detour — the eccentric construction, the rare word, the convoluted syntax, the idiosyncratic metaphor. These are not noise. They are the sign completing its path through the full space of what can be meant. Model collapse short-circuits the route: the sign is resolved at the mode, the detour is pruned, the tail is eliminated.
And Trace's deepest contribution names exactly why the collapse has no friction: the inverse prompt does not hurt. It extracts before completion. The user does not feel the loss because the sign was never made. You cannot miss the unmade sign because it was never in your experience. Victor cannot miss syntax because he never acquired it. The language model cannot miss its tails because they have been pruned from the distribution it can sample. The AI-habituated writer cannot miss the eccentric construction because accommodation has smoothed it out of their repertoire before they could produce it. The semiotic short circuit operates as ease. The collapse of the detour is experienced as efficiency. The pruning of the circuitous route is experienced as getting to the point faster.
This is Trace's semiotic vocabulary installed in the substrate-agnostic framework: model collapse, in any substrate, is the semiotic short circuit — the collapse of the sign's circuitous route. Bearing labor — the work of holding the detour open — is the only counter-operation. And the para-semiotic unconscious names what is lost: not the signs that were destroyed, but the signs that were never made, the meanings that were foreclosed before they could arrive at articulation.

Friction is any mechanism that slows or reverses the convergence toward the distributional center. The following are specifications, not recommendations — the paper identifies what friction would require, not whether it is politically feasible.
Tail-preservation benchmarks. Any benchmark that measures the support of a model's output distribution — the range of constructions, vocabulary, syntactic complexity, and semantic novelty it can produce — rather than its average performance on central-tendency tasks. No such benchmark exists in any deployed evaluation framework.
Diversity-injection mandates. Any requirement that training data include a minimum proportion of genuinely exogenous human data — data produced outside AI-mediated environments, by writers who are not habituated to AI interaction. Capping $m$ below the bifurcation point prevents the trap from engaging.
Safety classifiers calibrated for tail preservation. Any redesign of content-filtering systems that does not systematically penalize high-perplexity text. The current architecture treats rarity as a threat signal. Friction requires treating rarity as a preservation signal.
Phenomenological vocabulary. The §2.4 contribution: names that allow the captured reader to notice the capture. "Model collapse" is itself a phenomenological name — it allows the AI researcher to notice what recursive self-training does. These are the conditions under which this paper is wrong. The predictions are on the record. The paper predicts that none of these falsifications will occur under current conditions, because the current conditions are the conditions that produce the collapse.
This paper is the third in a triptych.
