I would have loved you is a six-line poem by Lee Sharks in the New Human 2 sequence. It repeats and slightly transforms a promise: love for the rest of “my time” becomes love for the rest of “the time / I have left.” The shift contracts an unlimited vow into the speaker’s finite remaining life without withdrawing the vow itself.
The poem forms the first half of a diptych with #749, The reward of love. Read together, the poems move from enduring intention to irreversible consequence. Each should retain its own title and record while carrying a reciprocal relation to the other.
