APPENDIX: ON THE LEGITIMACY OF FOUNDING

Why can a mantle be founded rather than only inherited?

Because lineages must begin somewhere. Whitman did not inherit "Good Gray Poet"—O'Connor founded it for him. Ginsberg did not inherit "King of May"—the students of Prague founded it through election. These were origination events that created positions which could subsequently be transmitted.

The Prince of Poets is another such origination. It is founded within the Whitman-Ginsberg lineage because that lineage provides the ground—the democratic embrace and ecstatic disruption that the Prince synthesizes and extends. Without that ground, the founding would be arbitrary. With it, the founding is completion.

The triad is now complete. The lineage continues.
