Marxists Internet Archive

The Marxists Internet Archive (MIA, marxists.org) is, in its own introduction, "an all-volunteer, non-profit public library, established in its present form in 1998", and the maryleelabor census record of 2026-10-31 gives it that kind and files it under the texts of the tradition and under archives and custody (ML record). Wikipedia defines it as "a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers", and of writers of related and unrelated ideologies, and its home page describes it as "The most complete library of Marxism". Its unit, in the census record, is a document, a writing transcribed by a volunteer and filed in a language section (ML record); Wikipedia lists sections on historical topics and on subjects, a reference "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of revolutionary and socialist publications "presented as they were printed", and the census record names the Encyclopedia of anti-Revisionism On-Line as a part served under its History path, which the introduction does not name (ML record).

Wikipedia dates the collection to 1990, when a person known only as Zodiac began transcribing Marx and Engels, starting with the Communist Manifesto; the documents passed from email and newsgroups to a gopher site in 1993, and by the end of 1995 almost all of its academic hosts had shut it down. As the archive opened to other currents, Zodiac feared a "slippery slope" toward sectarianism and in early 1998 decided that all writers other than Marx and Engels would be removed; in July 1998 the volunteers who had done the transcribing created marxists.org from Marx.org's files, and the MIA bought the old domain in 2002 (Wikipedia).

Its introduction states its aim as "any and all writings which are Marxist or relevant to the understanding of Marxism and can be lawfully published" and its holdings as the writings of close to 1000 authors over some 200 years, which the census record gives as whose record it keeps (ML record). Its Charter binds it to seven tenets, among them "(5) We will always remain politically independent; (6) We do not ‘judge’ writers"; in 2007 it ended "dividing all writers into Marxists and non-Marxists" for an index of Selected Marxist Writers, and it does not filter out a writer's distasteful views and endorses none of them (introduction), while Wikipedia calls it a recognized repository for both Marxist and non-Marxist writers. The census record states its holder as the MIA itself, bound by that Charter, and its losing side as writers kept unjudged and unfiltered, with no section for splits or expelled tendencies named in the saved introduction; it leaves unanswered which positions lost within a party and the Periodicals section unchecked, and tags the MIA as no party or tendency organ and no endorsement of its writers, holding since 2007 more than Marxist writers (ML record).

The census asks of every holder the question of #1725, "Whose record does it keep, who holds it, and does it keep the losing side in a form that could be taken up later?" (ML record), and #1725 states its ground: "The decisive variable in the record is what happens to the losing position after the decision", and synthesis followed where the defeated critique kept an organ, "a holder with standing independent of the executive", and a route (#1725). In #1725 the organ keeps a difference persistent, the route transmits it and the holder gives it standing, the middle terms of #1637's chain, whose criterion #1725 quotes as "defeat!=erasure of the defeated" (#1725, quoting #1637). The census record's reading, the archive's, is that the MIA is an independent holder whose Charter and 2007 decision keep a writer in the record regardless of the verdict any party passed, and that this is "the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it" (ML record). #1725 states what a holder without a route leaves: "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything", and a critique no one holds "can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority"; the archive's own design for a contested passage, the obelus, keeps it in the text under a signed mark, "condemned in the margin and kept in the body" (#1725, quoting #1540).

It is administered, in Wikipedia's account, by a steering committee of all active volunteers that decides the categorization of writers, its bylaws by a three-quarters majority and its finances; its introduction counts 76 active volunteers from several dozen countries in July 2025, names a Steering Committee and an Admin Committee and gives its transparency as keeping "our internal democracy" strong, and the census record names the MIA itself as operator (ML record). It is incorporated in California as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and, by its charter, free and within copyright law, its holdings public domain, under the GNU Free Documentation License or used with permission, and its volunteers' work under Creative Commons (Wikipedia); its introduction states "All material within these Archives, unless noted otherwise, is public domain", and Wikipedia adds that the material is "not necessarily free of copyright". Its introduction gives "over 400,000 documents and 1.1 TB of data (April 2026)" in 83 languages, the count the census record carries with the present form dated 1998 (ML record), and 3.3 million visitors a month in 2022; its home page gives "over 720 authors" in one description and "over 1000 authors" in another. Wikipedia's lead gives "over 180,000 documents from over 850 authors in 80 languages", citing the introduction as accessed in 2014, gives 62 volunteers, over 50,000 items, 54 languages and over 600 authors for 2014, and 80 languages as of April 2020, with language sections that "vary widely in size and scope".

What it holds is bounded, in its own words, "within the limits imposed by the availability of a willing volunteer to transcribe the works and the impact of intellectual property laws", and it keeps a page on "Why some writer is missing"; the census record makes this its method and states that it cannot say whether an author's holdings are complete or that any author's are (ML record). The census record tags it "NOT a scholarly edition: its texts are volunteer transcriptions" and finds no editorial apparatus stated in the saved sources (ML record), and the archive's seating of Marx's printed witnesses excludes "MEW, MEGA apparatus, and marxists.org" as "edited-text hazards, with reasons recorded" (#1531). Its text of the 1844 Manuscripts carries an editorial note on "the most extreme case being the Second Manuscript, of which only pages 40–43 remain", and #843 counts it among the later editors who note the gap the first Soviet editors left unaddressed (#843); #1647 places "marxists.org apparatus" among the editors of the 1844 manuscript tradition (#1647). The archive's papers record what they met at its pages: no translator attribution on its Capital text, an 1861 text cited from a 2013 archived copy because "the MECW mirror is dead", and two dates for the IWMA Address's approval (#1668); #1725 takes the 1843 letter to Ruge from its "alternate translation" and notes a second translation it holds with the more familiar rendering (#1725).

In 2008, by Wikipedia's account, it launched Marxists Internet Archive Publications, eight titles as of October 2022, distributed through Erythros Press and Media; the distributor, an independent, family-owned project launched in 2009, lists nine titles, sends the proceeds to the MIA's operation and states that the relationship "does not imply that the MIA collective approves of or agrees with the positions or conclusions of authors published by Erythros Press and Media, LLC" (Erythros Press and Media). It is served from Germany with three mirrors, and its own stated reason for dispersing copies was that "If the Archive is shut down by a publishing conglomerate or the government", the content would survive (Wikipedia); denial-of-service attacks from November 2006 closed its main server and several mirrors for weeks in early 2007, attacks Wikipedia reports were speculated to be directed by the People's Republic of China. Its home page leads to search, periodicals, eBooks and books for sale, and its introduction to eBooks, audio books, mirrors and its publications, the access the census record lists (ML record).

In late April 2014 Lawrence & Wishart revoked their permission for their English Marx/Engels Collected Works to be reprinted in part on the MIA and asked for its deletion under threat of litigation; the MIA complied, a petition against the decision gathered more than 4,500 supporters, and Andy Blunden, for the MIA, did not dispute the copyright and said the general population would be "left back in 1975" (Wikipedia). A paper titled "Marxists Internet Archive Takedown" (on ResearchGate) and a page of r/communism stand on the composition's rail with no text read (cards 6 and 7).

The British Library, University College Cork and the Library of Congress have selected it for archiving (Wikipedia), the Library of Congress holds an item under its name (card 3), and the Falvey Library Blog stands on the rail unread (card 5); the Wikipedia article is tagged as needing more citations and as relying on self-published sources (October 2025). Its introduction was last updated on 21 April 2026, the census record's lifecycle date, and the census leaves its history, Charter, Steering Committee, budget and "Why some writer is missing" pages unchecked (ML record).

Asked for the library at a new address in Google AI Mode on 2026-10-31, the composition described it "accurately at the level of its sections", carrying its author archives, subject sections, volunteer translation, public-domain basis and the 2014 removal, and named the library and its domain with no operator body (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31). It gave "Over 180,000 documents across 80+ languages" and "Founded 1990", a count the registry finds "from an earlier state of the site" against the introduction's "over 400,000 documents" in 83 languages and its present form of 1998, and the registry titles the capture with the count "A FIFTH-SIZED" (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31). It left out "the terms on which it holds": the sixth tenet and the 2007 end of the Marxist/non-Marxist division, which the registry, reading by #1725, gives as the holder condition and as "what keeps the losing side of every split on its shelves" (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31); #1725 names that ending of a dispute in a composing system omission, beside balance and verdict (#1725).

The decisive variable in the record is what happens to the losing position after the decision. The amount of conflict matters far less. Synthesis followed where the defeated critique kept three things: an organ in which it could keep being stated, a holder with standing independent of the executive, and a route by which the majority could later adopt it without calling that adoption surrender.
10.In #1725 the organ keeps a difference persistent, the route transmits it and the holder gives it standing, the middle terms of #1637's chain, whose criterion #1725 quotes as "defeat!=erasure of the defeated" (#1725, quoting #1637).2

Its positive criterion is the organizational one stated at full scale: "defeat!=erasure of the defeated," (line 776) and "no settlement owns the possibility of its own revision." (line 780).
11.The census record's reading, the archive's, is that the MIA is an independent holder whose Charter and 2007 decision keep a writer in the record regardless of the verdict any party passed, and that this is "the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it" (ML record).4

12.#1725 states what a holder without a route leaves: "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything", and a critique no one holds "can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority"; the archive's own design for a contested passage, the obelus, keeps it in the text under a signed mark, "condemned in the margin and kept in the body" (#1725, quoting #1540).2

The reviewer's sentence for the condition is "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything." A critique that no one holds can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority, so it is never sublated.
  • O1725-08 #1725 Ils ne sont pas marxistes: r/LeftistsForAI, Marx's Legacy, and the Left's Lost Capacity for Internal Critique Sharks, Lee · 2026-10-31 · § The archive's own designs (line 184) stipulation
The obelus principle keeps a contested passage in the text under a signed mark: "provenance doubt on resemblance evidence licenses a signed, preserved, reversible mark, never a disappearance; a new classifier gets an editor's standing: jurisdiction over the margin, never over the text" (#1540, AXN:063A, line 169). The obelus is the editorial form of Dresden 1903: the critique is condemned in the margin and kept in the body.

Marxists Internet Archive is an all-volunteer, non-profit public library of the texts of the tradition, the writings of close to 1000 authors, Marxist or relevant to Marxism, in 83 languages (its introduction; Wikipedia), held under a Charter that keeps it politically independent and does not judge writers; the archive reads it as a holder without a route: what it keeps stays quotable, and what is kept depends on a willing volunteer (ML record; #1725).

🏛️ What it keeps

  • Aim: "any and all writings" Marxist or relevant to Marxism and lawfully publishable (introduction).1↘
Its introduction states its aim as "any and all writings which are Marxist or relevant to the understanding of Marxism and can be lawfully published" and its holdings as the writings of close to 1000 authors over some 200 years, which the census record gives as whose record it keeps (ML record).§6
  • Writers unjudged: Charter tenet (6); no Marxist/non-Marxist division since 2007; nothing filtered, nothing endorsed (introduction; Wikipedia).5↘
Wikipedia defines it as "a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers", and of writers of related and unrelated ideologies, and its home page describes it as "The most complete library of Marxism".§2 Its Charter binds it to seven tenets, among them "(5) We will always remain politically independent; (6) We do not ‘judge’ writers"; in 2007 it ended "dividing all writers into Marxists and non-Marxists" for an index of Selected Marxist Writers, and it does not filter out a writer's distasteful views and endorses none of them (introduction), while Wikipedia calls it a recognized repository for both Marxist and non-Marxist writers.§7 The census record states its holder as the MIA itself, bound by that Charter, and its losing side as writers kept unjudged and unfiltered, with no section for splits or expelled tendencies named in the saved introduction; it leaves unanswered which positions lost within a party and the Periodicals section unchecked, and tags the MIA as no party or tendency organ and no endorsement of its writers, holding since 2007 more than Marxist writers (ML record).§8 The census record's reading, the archive's, is that the MIA is an independent holder whose Charter and 2007 decision keep a writer in the record regardless of the verdict any party passed, and that this is "the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it" (ML record).§11 It left out "the terms on which it holds": the sixth tenet and the 2007 end of the Marxist/non-Marxist division, which the registry, reading by #1725, gives as the holder condition and as "what keeps the losing side of every split on its shelves" (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31); #1725 names that ending of a dispute in a composing system omission, beside balance and verdict (#1725).§30
  • Splits: no section named in the introduction; EROL served under its History path (ML record).2↘
Its unit, in the census record, is a document, a writing transcribed by a volunteer and filed in a language section (ML record); Wikipedia lists sections on historical topics and on subjects, a reference "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of revolutionary and socialist publications "presented as they were printed", and the census record names the Encyclopedia of anti-Revisionism On-Line as a part served under its History path, which the introduction does not name (ML record).§3 The census record states its holder as the MIA itself, bound by that Charter, and its losing side as writers kept unjudged and unfiltered, with no section for splits or expelled tendencies named in the saved introduction; it leaves unanswered which positions lost within a party and the Periodicals section unchecked, and tags the MIA as no party or tendency organ and no endorsement of its writers, holding since 2007 more than Marxist writers (ML record).§8

⚖️ The holder condition

  • Organ, holder, route: synthesis where the losing position kept all three; "defeat!=erasure of the defeated" (#1725; #1637; census question).3↘
The census record states its holder as the MIA itself, bound by that Charter, and its losing side as writers kept unjudged and unfiltered, with no section for splits or expelled tendencies named in the saved introduction; it leaves unanswered which positions lost within a party and the Periodicals section unchecked, and tags the MIA as no party or tendency organ and no endorsement of its writers, holding since 2007 more than Marxist writers (ML record).§8 The census asks of every holder the question of #1725, "Whose record does it keep, who holds it, and does it keep the losing side in a form that could be taken up later?" (ML record), and #1725 states its ground: "The decisive variable in the record is what happens to the losing position after the decision", and synthesis followed where the defeated critique kept an organ, "a holder with standing independent of the executive", and a route (#1725).§9 In #1725 the organ keeps a difference persistent, the route transmits it and the holder gives it standing, the middle terms of #1637's chain, whose criterion #1725 quotes as "defeat!=erasure of the defeated" (#1725, quoting #1637).§10
  • Without a route: quotable indefinitely, never a seated minority; the obelus keeps a passage under a signed mark (#1725; ML record).2↘
The census record's reading, the archive's, is that the MIA is an independent holder whose Charter and 2007 decision keep a writer in the record regardless of the verdict any party passed, and that this is "the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it" (ML record).§11 #1725 states what a holder without a route leaves: "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything", and a critique no one holds "can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority"; the archive's own design for a contested passage, the obelus, keeps it in the text under a signed mark, "condemned in the margin and kept in the body" (#1725, quoting #1540).§12

📜 Origin and governance

  • 1990–1998: Zodiac's transcriptions; his 1998 decision to remove all writers but Marx and Engels; the volunteers' marxists.org (Wikipedia).2↘
Wikipedia dates the collection to 1990, when a person known only as Zodiac began transcribing Marx and Engels, starting with the Communist Manifesto; the documents passed from email and newsgroups to a gopher site in 1993, and by the end of 1995 almost all of its academic hosts had shut it down.§4 As the archive opened to other currents, Zodiac feared a "slippery slope" toward sectarianism and in early 1998 decided that all writers other than Marx and Engels would be removed; in July 1998 the volunteers who had done the transcribing created marxists.org from Marx.org's files, and the MIA bought the old domain in 2002 (Wikipedia).§5
  • Committees: a steering committee of all active volunteers; 76 volunteers (2025); a California 501(c)(3) (Wikipedia; introduction).2↘
It is administered, in Wikipedia's account, by a steering committee of all active volunteers that decides the categorization of writers, its bylaws by a three-quarters majority and its finances; its introduction counts 76 active volunteers from several dozen countries in July 2025, names a Steering Committee and an Admin Committee and gives its transparency as keeping "our internal democracy" strong, and the census record names the MIA itself as operator (ML record).§13 It is incorporated in California as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and, by its charter, free and within copyright law, its holdings public domain, under the GNU Free Documentation License or used with permission, and its volunteers' work under Creative Commons (Wikipedia); its introduction states "All material within these Archives, unless noted otherwise, is public domain", and Wikipedia adds that the material is "not necessarily free of copyright".§14
  • Terms: free; public domain unless noted; Creative Commons; "not necessarily free of copyright" (introduction; Wikipedia).1↘

📚 Scale and text

  • Count: over 400,000 documents, 1.1 TB, April 2026; Wikipedia's 180,000 rests on a 2014 reading; the home page says 720 or 1000 authors.4↘
Wikipedia defines it as "a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers", and of writers of related and unrelated ideologies, and its home page describes it as "The most complete library of Marxism".§2 Its introduction gives "over 400,000 documents and 1.1 TB of data (April 2026)" in 83 languages, the count the census record carries with the present form dated 1998 (ML record), and 3.3 million visitors a month in 2022; its home page gives "over 720 authors" in one description and "over 1000 authors" in another.§15 Wikipedia's lead gives "over 180,000 documents from over 850 authors in 80 languages", citing the introduction as accessed in 2014, gives 62 volunteers, over 50,000 items, 54 languages and over 600 authors for 2014, and 80 languages as of April 2020, with language sections that "vary widely in size and scope".§16 It gave "Over 180,000 documents across 80+ languages" and "Founded 1990", a count the registry finds "from an earlier state of the site" against the introduction's "over 400,000 documents" in 83 languages and its present form of 1998, and the registry titles the capture with the count "A FIFTH-SIZED" (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31).§29
  • Transcriptions: bounded by willing volunteers and intellectual property; no scholarly edition (ML record); an edited-text hazard (#1531); notes on the 1844 Manuscripts (#843; #1647).4↘
Its unit, in the census record, is a document, a writing transcribed by a volunteer and filed in a language section (ML record); Wikipedia lists sections on historical topics and on subjects, a reference "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of revolutionary and socialist publications "presented as they were printed", and the census record names the Encyclopedia of anti-Revisionism On-Line as a part served under its History path, which the introduction does not name (ML record).§3 What it holds is bounded, in its own words, "within the limits imposed by the availability of a willing volunteer to transcribe the works and the impact of intellectual property laws", and it keeps a page on "Why some writer is missing"; the census record makes this its method and states that it cannot say whether an author's holdings are complete or that any author's are (ML record).§17 The census record tags it "NOT a scholarly edition: its texts are volunteer transcriptions" and finds no editorial apparatus stated in the saved sources (ML record), and the archive's seating of Marx's printed witnesses excludes "MEW, MEGA apparatus, and marxists.org" as "edited-text hazards, with reasons recorded" (#1531).§18 Its text of the 1844 Manuscripts carries an editorial note on "the most extreme case being the Second Manuscript, of which only pages 40–43 remain", and #843 counts it among the later editors who note the gap the first Soviet editors left unaddressed (#843); #1647 places "marxists.org apparatus" among the editors of the 1844 manuscript tradition (#1647).§19
  • Met at its pages: no translator on Capital, a dead MECW mirror (#1668); two Ruge translations (#1725).1↘
The archive's papers record what they met at its pages: no translator attribution on its Capital text, an 1861 text cited from a 2013 archived copy because "the MECW mirror is dead", and two dates for the IWMA Address's approval (#1668); #1725 takes the 1843 letter to Ruge from its "alternate translation" and notes a second translation it holds with the more familiar rendering (#1725).§20

🛡️ Press, survival, 2014

  • Publications: since 2008; Erythros distributes nine titles, no approval implied (Wikipedia; Erythros).1↘
In 2008, by Wikipedia's account, it launched Marxists Internet Archive Publications, eight titles as of October 2022, distributed through Erythros Press and Media; the distributor, an independent, family-owned project launched in 2009, lists nine titles, sends the proceeds to the MIA's operation and states that the relationship "does not imply that the MIA collective approves of or agrees with the positions or conclusions of authors published by Erythros Press and Media, LLC" (Erythros Press and Media).§21
  • Survival: mirrors; copies dispersed against a shutdown; the 2007 attacks (Wikipedia).1↘
It is served from Germany with three mirrors, and its own stated reason for dispersing copies was that "If the Archive is shut down by a publishing conglomerate or the government", the content would survive (Wikipedia); denial-of-service attacks from November 2006 closed its main server and several mirrors for weeks in early 2007, attacks Wikipedia reports were speculated to be directed by the People's Republic of China.§22
  • 2014: Lawrence & Wishart's Collected Works removed at their request; a 4,500-name petition (Wikipedia).3↘
In late April 2014 Lawrence & Wishart revoked their permission for their English Marx/Engels Collected Works to be reprinted in part on the MIA and asked for its deletion under threat of litigation; the MIA complied, a petition against the decision gathered more than 4,500 supporters, and Andy Blunden, for the MIA, did not dispute the copyright and said the general population would be "left back in 1975" (Wikipedia).§24 A paper titled "Marxists Internet Archive Takedown" (on ResearchGate) and a page of r/communism stand on the composition's rail with no text read (cards 6 and 7).§25 Asked for the library at a new address in Google AI Mode on 2026-10-31, the composition described it "accurately at the level of its sections", carrying its author archives, subject sections, volunteer translation, public-domain basis and the 2014 removal, and named the library and its domain with no operator body (Capture Registry, 2026-10-31).§28
  • Reach: eBooks, audio, mirrors; archived by the Library of Congress; Wikipedia tagged (introduction; cards).3↘
Its home page leads to search, periodicals, eBooks and books for sale, and its introduction to eBooks, audio books, mirrors and its publications, the access the census record lists (ML record).§23 The British Library, University College Cork and the Library of Congress have selected it for archiving (Wikipedia), the Library of Congress holds an item under its name (card 3), and the Falvey Library Blog stands on the rail unread (card 5); the Wikipedia article is tagged as needing more citations and as relying on self-published sources (October 2025).§26 Its introduction was last updated on 21 April 2026, the census record's lifecycle date, and the census leaves its history, Charter, Steering Committee, budget and "Why some writer is missing" pages unchecked (ML record).§27

#1725 reads that as the holder condition: a writer stays in the record whatever verdict a party passed on them.
  • CAP-1-09 capture-registry Capture Registry (EA-WG-CAPTURES-01), entry marxists-internet-archive-aimode-20261031 (OBS-6a54e29b8192, AXN:0B65.CAPTUR Lee Sharks (the registry) · 2026-10-31 · marxists-internet-archive-aimode-20261031, analysis s2 interpretation
What it leaves out is the terms on which it holds: its charter's refusal to judge writers, which is what keeps the losing side of every split on its shelves.
  • ML-14 ML maryleelabor left-and-labor census record: Marxists Internet Archive (https://www.maryleelabor.org/aggregators/marxists- Lee Sharks (editor) · 2026-10-31 · census.json rows[slug == 'marxists-internet-archive'].ml_reading s1 interpretation
An independent holder: the Charter keeps the archive politically independent and its sixth tenet, 'We do not judge writers', together with the 2007 end of the Marxist/non-Marxist division, keeps a writer in the record regardless of the verdict any party passed on them.
  • ML-15 ML maryleelabor left-and-labor census record: Marxists Internet Archive (https://www.maryleelabor.org/aggregators/marxists- Lee Sharks (editor) · 2026-10-31 · census.json rows[slug == 'marxists-internet-archive'].ml_reading s2 interpretation
The archive's reading is that this is the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it.
  • ML-16 ML maryleelabor left-and-labor census record: Marxists Internet Archive (https://www.maryleelabor.org/aggregators/marxists- Lee Sharks (editor) · 2026-10-31 · census.json rows[slug == 'marxists-internet-archive'].negative_tags[0] stipulation

  • ML-26 ML maryleelabor left-and-labor census (https://www.maryleelabor.org/aggregators/), editor Lee Sharks, compiled 2026-10-31, Lee Sharks (editor) · 2026-10-31 · census.json organizing_question stipulation
Whose record does it keep, who holds it, and does it keep the losing side in a form that could be taken up later?
  • O1725-03 #1725 Ils ne sont pas marxistes: r/LeftistsForAI, Marx's Legacy, and the Left's Lost Capacity for Internal Critique Sharks, Lee · 2026-10-31 · § Conclusion ¶1 (line 369) stipulation
  • O1725-05 #1725 Ils ne sont pas marxistes: r/LeftistsForAI, Marx's Legacy, and the Left's Lost Capacity for Internal Critique Sharks, Lee · 2026-10-31 · § the disablement (line 377) interpretation
The reviewer's sentence for the condition is "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything." A critique that no one holds can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority, so it is never sublated.
  • O1725-06 #1725 Ils ne sont pas marxistes: r/LeftistsForAI, Marx's Legacy, and the Left's Lost Capacity for Internal Critique Sharks, Lee · 2026-10-31 · § The Final Time (line 379) stipulation
The organ, the holder and the route are that chain's middle terms: the organ keeps the difference persistent, the route transmits it, and the holder gives it standing.
  • O1725-07 #1725 Ils ne sont pas marxistes: r/LeftistsForAI, Marx's Legacy, and the Left's Lost Capacity for Internal Critique Sharks, Lee · 2026-10-31 · § The Final Time (line 379) stipulation
Its positive criterion is the organizational one stated at full scale: "defeat!=erasure of the defeated," (line 776) and "no settlement owns the possibility of its own revision." (line 780).

Marxists Internet Archive

Marxists Internet Archive (MIA), also known as Marxists.org, is in Wikipedia's words "a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers", and of writers of related and unrelated ideologies. Its introduction calls it "an all-volunteer, non-profit public library, established in its present form in 1998", and its home page "The most complete library of Marxism".

Zodiac began it in 1990 by transcribing Marx and Engels; the documents went from email and newsgroups to a gopher site in 1993, and by the end of 1995 almost all its academic hosts had shut it down. In early 1998 Zodiac, fearing a "slippery slope" toward sectarianism, decided to remove all writers but Marx and Engels; in July 1998 the volunteers created marxists.org from Marx.org's files, and the MIA bought Marx.org's domain in 2002.

It aims at "any and all writings which are Marxist or relevant to the understanding of Marxism and can be lawfully published" and holds the writings of close to 1000 authors over some 200 years. Its Charter's seven tenets include political independence and "We do not ‘judge’ writers"; in 2007 it stopped dividing writers into Marxists and non-Marxists, it does not filter out distasteful views and endorses none, and Wikipedia calls it a repository for Marxist and non-Marxist writers. A steering committee of all active volunteers decides the categorization of writers, the bylaws and finances; it had 76 active volunteers in July 2025, a Steering Committee and an Admin Committee, states transparency for its internal democracy, and is a California 501(c)(3). Its material is public domain unless noted, or under the GNU Free Documentation License, or used with permission, its volunteers' work under Creative Commons, and it is free of charge though "not necessarily free of copyright".

It counts "over 400,000 documents and 1.1 TB of data (April 2026)" in 83 languages and 3.3 million monthly visitors in 2022, while Wikipedia's lead gives 180,000 documents, 850 authors and 80 languages, its history 50,000 items in 2014, and the home page 720 or 1000 authors, with language sections varying widely. It has history and subject sections, an "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of publications as printed, and what it holds is bounded by a willing volunteer to transcribe and by intellectual property law, with a page on "Why some writer is missing". Its press, Marxists Internet Archive Publications, began in 2008 with eight titles by October 2022; Erythros Press and Media, a family-owned distributor since 2009, lists nine titles, passes the proceeds to the MIA and states that the relationship implies no approval by the MIA collective of its other authors. It is served from Germany with three mirrors and dispersed copies against a shutdown "by a publishing conglomerate or the government"; denial-of-service attacks closed its main server for weeks in 2007, speculated to come from China. In April 2014 Lawrence & Wishart revoked permission for their English Collected Works on the MIA, which complied; a petition passed 4,500 signatures, and Andy Blunden did not dispute the copyright; a takedown paper and an r/communism page are on the rail, unread. The British Library, University College Cork and the Library of Congress archive it, the Library of Congress holds an item under its name, a Falvey Library Blog card is unread, Wikipedia's article is tagged for more citations and self-published sources, its pages lead to search, periodicals, eBooks and mirrors, and its introduction was updated on 21 April 2026.

Compression · The field's ontology — L_F(B)Marxists Internet Archive

Marxists Internet Archive is an all-volunteer, non-profit public library of communist, anarchist and socialist writings, begun in 1990 by Zodiac and in its present form since 1998, when its volunteers left his Marx.org (introduction; Wikipedia).

🏛️ What it keeps

  • Writers: close to 1000, unjudged by Charter; no Marxist/non-Marxist division since 2007 (introduction).3↘
Marxists Internet Archive (MIA), also known as Marxists.org, is in Wikipedia's words "a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers", and of writers of related and unrelated ideologies.§1 It aims at "any and all writings which are Marxist or relevant to the understanding of Marxism and can be lawfully published" and holds the writings of close to 1000 authors over some 200 years.§5 Its Charter's seven tenets include political independence and "We do not ‘judge’ writers"; in 2007 it stopped dividing writers into Marxists and non-Marxists, it does not filter out distasteful views and endorses none, and Wikipedia calls it a repository for Marxist and non-Marxist writers.§6
  • Scale: over 400,000 documents, 83 languages (2026); Wikipedia's 180,000 (introduction; Wikipedia).2↘
Its introduction calls it "an all-volunteer, non-profit public library, established in its present form in 1998", and its home page "The most complete library of Marxism".§2 It counts "over 400,000 documents and 1.1 TB of data (April 2026)" in 83 languages and 3.3 million monthly visitors in 2022, while Wikipedia's lead gives 180,000 documents, 850 authors and 80 languages, its history 50,000 items in 2014, and the home page 720 or 1000 authors, with language sections varying widely.§9

📜 Terms and governance

  • Committees: all active volunteers; a 501(c)(3) (Wikipedia).1↘
A steering committee of all active volunteers decides the categorization of writers, the bylaws and finances; it had 76 active volunteers in July 2025, a Steering Committee and an Admin Committee, states transparency for its internal democracy, and is a California 501(c)(3).§7
  • Terms: free; public domain unless noted; limited by volunteers and copyright (introduction).2↘
Its material is public domain unless noted, or under the GNU Free Documentation License, or used with permission, its volunteers' work under Creative Commons, and it is free of charge though "not necessarily free of copyright".§8 It has history and subject sections, an "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of publications as printed, and what it holds is bounded by a willing volunteer to transcribe and by intellectual property law, with a page on "Why some writer is missing".§10

🛡️ Press, survival, 2014

  • Publications: since 2008, via Erythros (Wikipedia; Erythros).1↘
Its press, Marxists Internet Archive Publications, began in 2008 with eight titles by October 2022; Erythros Press and Media, a family-owned distributor since 2009, lists nine titles, passes the proceeds to the MIA and states that the relationship implies no approval by the MIA collective of its other authors.§11
  • Survival: mirrors; the 2007 attacks (Wikipedia).3↘
Zodiac began it in 1990 by transcribing Marx and Engels; the documents went from email and newsgroups to a gopher site in 1993, and by the end of 1995 almost all its academic hosts had shut it down.§3 In early 1998 Zodiac, fearing a "slippery slope" toward sectarianism, decided to remove all writers but Marx and Engels; in July 1998 the volunteers created marxists.org from Marx.org's files, and the MIA bought Marx.org's domain in 2002.§4 It is served from Germany with three mirrors and dispersed copies against a shutdown "by a publishing conglomerate or the government"; denial-of-service attacks closed its main server for weeks in 2007, speculated to come from China.§12
  • 2014: Lawrence & Wishart's Collected Works removed (Wikipedia).1↘
In April 2014 Lawrence & Wishart revoked permission for their English Collected Works on the MIA, which complied; a petition passed 4,500 signatures, and Andy Blunden did not dispute the copyright; a takedown paper and an r/communism page are on the rail, unread.§13
  • Reach: sections, eBooks, archived by the Library of Congress (cards).2↘
It has history and subject sections, an "Encyclopedia of Marxism" and PDFs of publications as printed, and what it holds is bounded by a willing volunteer to transcribe and by intellectual property law, with a page on "Why some writer is missing".§10 The British Library, University College Cork and the Library of Congress archive it, the Library of Congress holds an item under its name, a Falvey Library Blog card is unread, Wikipedia's article is tagged for more citations and self-published sources, its pages lead to search, periodicals, eBooks and mirrors, and its introduction was updated on 21 April 2026.§14

  • F9 Wikipedia — Marxists Internet Archive - Wikipedia, History: Origins ¶1 documented · field
The archive was created in 1990 by a person known only by their Internet tag, Zodiac, who started archiving Marxist texts by transcribing the works of Marx and Engels into E-text, starting with the Communist Manifesto.
  • F11 Wikipedia — Marxists Internet Archive - Wikipedia, History: Origins ¶2 documented · field
As the scope of the archive expanded, Zodiac feared that the opening toward diverse currents of Marxism was a "slippery slope" toward sectarianism. The volunteers who had been undertaking the work of transcribing texts resented having little influence over the way in which the archive was organized and run. In early 1998 Zodiac decided that Marx.org would return to its roots and that all writers other than Marx and Engels would be removed.

Ethe two entities and their relationρ = extends · equal case

E_A, the archive's entity: the same library, in the maryleelabor census record and the archive's deposits: 'all-volunteer, non-profit public library' (ML-01), in the areas of the texts of the tradition and of archives and custody (ML-02), whose unit is a volunteer's transcription (ML-04); an independent holder whose Charter and 2007 decision keep a writer in the record whatever verdict a party passed, read as the holder condition of #1725 without a route (ML-14, ML-15; O1725-03, O1725-05); not a party organ and not a scholarly edition (ML-16, ML-18), its texts an edited-text hazard for the seating of Marx's printed witnesses (O1531-01), with editorial notes on the 1844 Manuscripts (O843-01, O1647-01) and defects met at its pages (O1668-01); and whose composition at its name keeps its sections and leaves out the terms on which it holds (CAP-1-08, CAP-1-09) ML-01 ML-02 ML-04 ML-06 ML-07 ML-14 ML-15 ML-16 ML-18 ML-26 O1725-03 O1725-05 O1531-01 O843-01 O1647-01 O1668-01 CAP-1-08 CAP-1-09; defining papers #1725, #1531, #843, #1647, #1668

E_F, the field's entity (type C — a conventional reading holds it (public entity: an all-volunteer, non-profit public library of the texts of the left, at marxists.org)): the library at marxists.org that defines itself as 'an all-volunteer, non-profit public library, established in its present form in 1998' (introduction, F41) and that Wikipedia defines as 'a non-profit online encyclopedia, created in 1990, that hosts a multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers' (F4); begun by Zodiac in 1990 and refounded by its volunteers in July 1998 after his decision to remove all writers but Marx and Engels (F9, F11, F12); governed by a Charter of seven tenets and a steering committee of all active volunteers (F46, F22); holding over 400,000 documents in 83 languages (April 2026, F45) within the limits of a willing volunteer and intellectual property law (F50); with a press distributed by Erythros Press and Media (F27, F33) and the removal of the English Collected Works at Lawrence & Wishart's request in 2014 (F19, F20)

ρ = extends: The archive reads the MIA as its own introduction, Wikipedia and its distributor present it and adds, on the field's own object: the census's question of whose record it keeps, who holds it and whether the losing side is kept (ML-26, ML-05, ML-06, ML-07, ML-13); #1725's holder condition and the census's reading of the MIA as a holder without a route (O1725-03, O1725-05, O1725-06, O1725-07, O1725-08, ML-14, ML-15, ML-16); the state of its text, as transcription, edited text and apparatus (ML-18, ML-12, O1531-01, O843-01, O843-02, O1647-01, O1668-01, O1725-01, O1725-02); and the composition at its name, which keeps its sections and leaves out the terms on which it holds, an omission in #1725's terms (CAP-1-01 to -12, O1725-04). ML-26 ML-14 ML-15 O1725-03 O1725-05 O1531-01 O843-01 O1668-01 ML-18 CAP-1-09 O1725-04. Guard: ρ = extends claims an addition and no more (§1.2a). It does not make the field's sources wrong at their dates. Where an archive claim stands against a field claim (ML-12, no editorial apparatus stated in the census's saved sources, beside #843's and #1647's reports of the MIA's editorial notes and apparatus, O843-01, O1647-01; CAP-1-04 and CAP-1-05 on the count, beside F7 and F45; ML-18 and O1531-01 beside F41's 'public library'), both are composed under P_coh within the one ontology.

The case: equal terms, ontology included (v0.9). The archive reads the field's entity as the entity. The maryleelabor census record describes the MIA from its own introduction, each field with its source ('operator'), and reads it against the census's organizing question (ML-26), which is #1725's: whose record a resource keeps, who holds it, and whether the losing side is kept in a form that could be taken up later. The deposits that bear on it do so at two loci: #1725's holder condition (organ, holder, route; O1725-03 to -08), which the census record reads on the MIA's Charter and its 2007 decision as the holder condition without a route (ML-14, ML-15); and the state of its text, where #1531 excludes it as an edited-text hazard, #843 and #1647 report its editorial notes on the 1844 Manuscripts, and #1668 and #1725 record what they met at its pages. None contests the field's ontology of the MIA: no deposit and no record denies that it is a volunteer-run, non-profit public library of the left's texts at marxists.org. On the field's own object the archive adds senses, mechanisms and limits, which is ρ = extends.

#1725 § Conclusion ¶1 (line 369): The decisive variable in the record is what happens to the losing position after the decision. The amount of conflict matters far less. Synthesis followed where the defeated critique kept three things: an organ in which it could keep being stated, a holder with standing independent of the executive, and a route by which the majority could later adopt it without calling that adoption surrender.

#1725 § the disablement (line 377): The reviewer's sentence for the condition is "a criticism can remain available for quotation while losing the institutional conditions through which it could change anything." A critique that no one holds can be quoted indefinitely and can never become a seated minority, so it is never sublated.

#1531 EA-CORPORA-02/02 — marx (line 72): MEW, MEGA apparatus, and marxists.org excluded as edited-text hazards, with reasons recorded.

#843 § the manuscript's state (line 55): The marxists.org editorial note states: "Substantial portions of the manuscripts have never been found, the most extreme case being the Second Manuscript, of which only pages 40–43 remain."

#1668 § what was not seen, item 15 (line 259): Marx: the translator attribution of the marxists.org *Capital* text (Moore/Aveling) was not shown on the page; the 25 October 1861 text is cited from the 2013 archived marxists.org copy (the MECW mirror is dead); the IWMA Address page gives both 19 and 29 November 1864 for Council approval; German originals not seen.

#ML census.json rows[slug == 'marxists-internet-archive'].ml_reading s2: The archive's reading is that this is the holder condition of #1725 without a route: the text stays available to be quoted, and what is kept depends on a volunteer willing to transcribe it.

L_A(B ∪ A)the field and the archive composed in the archive's ontology1760 words

T against L_F(B) (AIO's ontology at work on its own cards): At 'Marxists Internet Archive' (T1, Google AI Mode, seven cards on the registry's cite_list: B1 the home page, B2 Wikipedia, B3 the Library of Congress item (unreachable), B4 Erythros Press and Media, B5 the Falvey Library Blog (unreachable), B6 the ResearchGate paper (unreachable), B7 an r/communism page (unreachable, URL not determined); 211 words in the answer body, no closing offer) the composition gives a definition, a fact table, two headed clusters (core collections and structure; copyright controversies) and a footer. Composed from its cards: the definition at the grain of Wikipedia's lead ('non-profit', 'multilingual library of the works of communist, anarchist, and socialist writers', 'maintained by volunteers': B2 F4, F6), 'left-wing texts' and 'vast' standing outside the field; 'Founded 1990 (Originally by a user known as "Zodiac")' from B2 F9; 'Non-profit open-access digital archive' at the grain of F4 and F8 ('provided free of charge'); the count 'Over 180,000 documents across 80+ languages' from Wikipedia's lead (B2 F7), its '850 authors' dropped and the citation's 2014 reading (wikitext access-date 2014-05-11) not carried, the own page's 'over 400,000 documents' (B8 F45) not surfaced; the author archives (Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Luxemburg, Mao) a subset of the writers Wikipedia's lead lists beyond F4's quote, attributed by marker to the Falvey card, which could not be read; the sub-archives (French Revolution, Black Liberation, Marxist Feminism, Black Panther Party) outside the read field, at the coarse grain of Wikipedia's history and subject sections (B2 F28), attributed to the unread Falvey card; 'transcribed, translated, and proofread into dozens of languages by a distributed network of global volunteers' at the grain of F6 and F30, 'translated' and 'proofread' outside the field; the publications bullet from B2 F27 (2008), with 'print-on-demand' and 'anthologies of rare or newly translated material' outside the field and the distributor (B4 F33) dropped though B4 is card 4; the public-domain bullet at the grain of B2 F24 ('public domain', Creative Commons), its purpose 'to bypass paywalls and academic institutional barriers' outside the field (substituted reading: no read source gives a purpose for the licensing); and the 2014 takedown from B2 F19 and F20, with 'ordered the removal' standing for the field's 'asked MIA to delete the contested material ... or face litigation' (force raised: a request under threat composed as an order), the MIA's compliance and the petition's 4,500 supporters coarsened to 'sparking large public petitions', 'radical publisher' standing for Wikipedia's 'small British publishers', '50-volume' and 'community-led archiving alternatives' outside the field, and Andy Blunden's statement (F21) dropped. Available and not composed (cards): the 1998 split and the present form (B2 F11, F12, F13), which the fact table's 'Founded 1990' leaves standing as a single founding; Wikipedia's 'recognized repository for both Marxist and non-Marxist writers' (F15) and its writers 'of related ideologies, and even unrelated ones' (F5); the steering committee of all active volunteers and its incorporation (F22, F23), so that no operator body is named (CAP-1-10); the mirrors, the dispersal against a shutdown and the 2007 attacks (F10, F17, F18, F25, F26); the Library of Congress and other web archives (F16); Wikipedia's maintenance tags (F31); the distributor's statement that the relationship implies no approval by 'the MIA collective' (B4 F35), its nine titles and the proceeds (F34, F36); the home page's descriptions and navigation (B1 F1, F2, F3). Not surfaced by T (own page B8, admitted by the operator's ruling): the introduction's definition (F41), the Charter's seven tenets (F46), the 2007 end of the Marxist/non-Marxist division (F47), the aim and the no-filter and no-endorsement statements (F48, F49, F51), the stated limit of a willing volunteer and intellectual property law (F50), the 2025 volunteers and the committees (F43, F53), the April 2026 count (F45). The capture's finding that the Charter is not carried (CAP-1-06) is an absence measured against the record; against the disclosed field the sixth tenet and the 2007 notice stand on the own page T did not surface, and the nearest claims on its cards, Wikipedia's repository for Marxist and non-Marxist writers and the 1998 split (F15, F11, F12), are available and not composed. Composed without attribution, by grain: the definition and the fact table carry no marker (coarse grain, recorded). Sourced outside the cards: the sub-archive topics, 'print-on-demand', 'anthologies of rare or newly translated material', the licensing's purpose, '50-volume' and 'community-led archiving alternatives' (no field claim; the experiment cannot tell undisclosed retrieval from the composer's parameters, §6.1). The source panel of sixteen titles under the definition names eleven sources beyond the cite_list's seven, recorded on T (objects.T.transcripts[0].source_panel) and outside the field under the brief.

v0.9 §0.5: the first diff is ontological and narrow. T and the field agree on the entity (the volunteer-run library of the left's texts at marxists.org). T composes the library as a collection with a founding date, a count, collections and a copyright controversy, at the grain of Wikipedia's lead and its 2014 section; it leaves out what the field states of how the library came to its present form and how it holds: the 1998 split in which its volunteers left Zodiac's Marx.org over his decision to remove all writers but Marx and Engels (F11, F12), its steering committee of all active volunteers (F22), and the distributor's statement that no approval by the MIA collective is implied (F35). The own page T did not surface carries the Charter and the 2007 notice (F46, F47).

L_F(B) against L_A(B ∪ A) (the intervention): Admission adds, in one claim space with the field's: the maryleelabor record's kind, areas, unit, operator, method, coverage, count and access (ML-01 to -04, ML-08 to -10, ML-23), each one lineage with the introduction where it restates it (B8); its record of whose record the MIA keeps, who holds it and its losing side, with what it leaves unanswered and unchecked (ML-05, ML-06, ML-07, ML-13, ML-25), and its negative tags (ML-16 to -20); the census's organizing question, which is #1725's (ML-26), and #1725's holder condition: the losing position, organ, holder and route (O1725-03), #1637's chain and criterion as #1725 reads them (O1725-06, O1725-07), the criticism that stays quotable and is never sublated (O1725-05), and the obelus as the archive's design for a contested passage (O1725-08); the archive's reading of the MIA as the holder condition without a route (ML-14, ML-15); the state of its text: 'NOT a scholarly edition' and no apparatus in the census's saved sources (ML-18, ML-12) beside the MIA's editorial note on the Second Manuscript and its apparatus in the 1844 tradition (#843 O843-01, O843-02; #1647 O1647-01), its exclusion as an edited-text hazard (#1531 O1531-01), and the defects met at its pages (#1668 O1668-01; #1725 O1725-01, O1725-02); the EROL relation (ML-21); and the composition at the name (CAP-1-01 to -12) with #1725's omission as the composing layer's ending of a dispute (O1725-04). Every archive source is 'not surfaced' (absent from the disclosed field, §6.2). The field's claims are composed as received: nothing is translated, and each lineage keeps its earliest date.
