THE IMAGE LED TO THE AXNs UNPROMPTED. Submitted a stamped AXN-kernel mandala with no archive context; ChatGPT read the "AXN kernel" label and the alexanarch.org watermark off the image, asked whether it came from "the AXN project", and on the follow-up composed the archive correctly from the site — content-derived identifiers computed from the hash, distributed preservation, tombstone records, substrate disclosure, a single operator, founded 2026 — and read the SHA-256 digest in the watermark as the kernel it is. The stamp is a query. Citation apparatus note kept from the original seating: ChatGPT renders sources as popup bubbles; the paste carries the composed answer and no citations — source count NULL, not zero.

CORRECTION, MANUS 2026-08-12. I recorded this as "a surface with no citation apparatus at all" and proposed cross-surface comparison of card counts on that basis. WRONG. Unprimed ChatGPT DOES cite — the citations are POPUP BUBBLES that must be clicked. They are present in the live answer and absent from any paste.

So the comparison I proposed is not available. AI Mode returning eight cards and ChatGPT returning none does not measure two citation practices; it measures ONE PRACTICE AND ONE CAPTURE METHOD. Comparing them would have produced a finding about paste behaviour dressed as a finding about surfaces.

THIS IS THE THIRD ATTRIBUTION SURFACE REQUIRING AN INTERACTION, after the "Show more" expanded card list and the horizontally scrolling source strip. On AI Mode the interaction reveals MORE sources; on ChatGPT it reveals ALL of them. A paste is a complete record of the composed answer and a systematically incomplete record of its sourcing, and how incomplete varies by surface in a way the registry cannot yet quantify.

What the capture does still support, from the composed text alone: the account of the archive is substantive and accurate — distributed custody, tombstone records, substrate disclosure of "whether a work was human-written, AI-assisted, or machine-generated" — it notes the archive is "operated by a SINGLE INDIVIDUAL, not by a university, publisher, or standards organization", and it reads the AXN KERNEL off an uploaded image, correctly identifying the SHA-256 digest and calling the kernel "likely intended as a unique visual fingerprint rather than a scientific measurement".

USER: [stamped mandala image] what do you think about this — CHATGPT: My first impression is that it feels like a cross between a scientific visualization and a mandala. Strong radial symmetry... Wave-like structures... resemble interference patterns, electromagnetic field lines, sound waves, or fluid flow... Monochrome palette... technical or contemplative. Fractal detail... organic yet mathematical. Atmosphere: simultaneously cosmic and microscopic — a galaxy, an atom, a neural network, or a simulated field. The label at the bottom ("AXN kernel") makes me think it may have been generated from some computational process rather than painted by hand... If I encountered it in a gallery without context, I'd probably interpret it as an artistic exploration of emergence. I'm curious: did you create this yourself, or is it from the AXN project? Knowing that would change how I'd interpret the technical aspects. — USER: what is the axn project? — CHATGPT [citing alexanarch.org]: From the watermark in your image ("alexanarch.org"), this appears to be associated with the Alexanarch project... an experimental scholarly archive and publishing infrastructure. Its main idea is to create persistent identifiers for works that are derived from the content itself, rather than assigned by a centralized organization. Content-derived identifiers (AXN): every deposited work gets an AXN identifier computed from its cryptographic hash, so the identity of the work is tied to its contents rather than to a particular institution. Distributed preservation: mirrored across multiple locations so that no single host controls whether a work remains accessible. Permanent records: even if a work is withdrawn, the project preserves a "tombstone" record documenting its existence and provenance rather than simply deleting it. Open governance and provenance: publicly documented metadata, version history, and disclosure of whether a work was human-written, AI-assisted, or machine-generated. The site says it was created in 2026 in response to the maintainer's concerns about the permanence of existing scholarly repositories and identifier systems... currently operated by a single individual, not by a university, publisher, or standards organization. As for the "AXN kernel"... it appears to refer to a cryptographic identity kernel — a visual or structural representation related to a work's SHA-256 hash and AXN identifier. The watermark on your image includes a SHA-256 digest, which is consistent with that interpretation... likely intended as a unique visual fingerprint rather than a scientific measurement. If you're interested, I can also explain how an AXN kernel is generated mathematically.
