Reading

The innocent reading first. Asked for the acronym, the Overview gives what the standard is, what it does, its format and size, who manages it, and where to register.

Findings

THE STANDARD IN ITS OWN WORDS. The first sentence follows the home page ('ISNI is the ISO certified global standard number for identifying the millions of contributors to creative works and those active in their distribution, including researchers, inventors, writers, artists, visual creators, performers, producers, publishers, aggregators, and more') and Wikipedia's 'public identities of contributors'. The counts are the home page's: 'ISNI holds public records of more than 16.6 million identities', 'over 14.6 million individuals', and '2,076,462 organizations or groups', which the answer rounds to '2 million organizations'.
THE NAMES, IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. 'Connects Identities: Links multiple names, stage names, pseudonyms, or legal names used by a single person under one persistent digital profile.' The saved Wikipedia article: 'If an author has published under several different names or pseudonyms, each such name will receive its own ISNI', and 'The ISNI allows a single identity (such as an author's pseudonym or the imprint used by a publisher ) to be identified using a unique number.' Its 'single linking ISNI record' is given for a performer who is also a writer of music and of poems, one identity across several functions. The composition joins pseudonyms and legal names to 'a single person' under one profile, a linkage no saved source states; the census row records that whether one author's separate ISNIs are linked to one another or to a civil person 'is not shown in the saved sources'. The home page's mission assigns the number 'to the public name(s)'.
THE AGENCY WITHOUT ITS ORIGIN. 'Managed by the London-based ISNI International Agency (ISNI-IA)' matches the home page ('c/o EDItEUR, United House, North Road, London'). The founding consortium (CISAC, CENL, IFRRO, IPDA, OCLC, ProQuest), the basis in VIAF ('The system is based primarily on the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) service') and the 2012 standard are not carried; the bridge goes to 'ORCID (in scholarly publishing), IPI, and ISBN', and the article's account of ORCID as a block of ISNI space does not appear. The Bowker register the answer points to is the home page's news item ('Bowker Launches New International ISNI Assignment Service for the Book Industry').

Analysis analyst prose, not machine text

Accurate at the level of definition, format, size and agency. On the census's question it states a linkage of a person's names under one profile, where the saved account gives each published name its own number.
