"text": "Taper is an online literary magazine for small computational pieces, published by Bad Quarto; the metadata of its index page calls it a twice-yearly journal for tiny computational poems, and its issue pages call it an online literary journal for computational poetry and literary art. Its pieces are web pages written in HTML5 with ES6 and read in a browser, and its contributors' and social pages describe them as tiny computational poems. The census record marks it as a literary magazine of computational pieces, distinct from a generator archive or a code repository. Each issue is edited by a collective: the editors make all decisions, work with authors, produce each issue and choose the theme of the next, and the publisher, Nick Montfort, Bad Quarto's proprietor, offers some help at the initial and final stages of the workflow. The sixteenth issue's collective was Angela Chang, Kavi Duvvoori, Leonardo Flores, Agustin Rosa and Helen Shewolfe Tseng; Chang's page records an editor since the magazine's inception in 2018, on the editorial committee for 13 issues as of 2025, in a remotely located volunteer collective, and Tseng's records a contributor since Spring 2022 and a member of the collective since Spring 2024. Editing and production are done in coordination with The Trope Tank, a laboratory at MIT that Montfort directs, and the magazine is not officially associated with MIT or hosted on an MIT server. Bad Quarto has also published Our Generation, a booklet of computer-generated texts. Its unit is the themed issue, assembled from a call for work: Taper #1, a minimal labyrinth, appeared in Spring 2018, and the index lists sixteen issues through Taper #16, for good measure, which the index, the issue's own page and a contributor's page date to Spring 2026. The magazine's Facebook page, as its card renders it, announced Taper #16 on 6 August 2025, a date that falls before the Fall 2025 the index gives Taper #15; the census record takes the index's dates. Its pages and the census call it twice-yearly, and its index passes from Taper #3 in Spring 2019 to Taper #4 in Spring 2020 with no issue between; the Capture Registry reads the census's \"two issues a year\" and the composition's \"biannual\" as passing over that gap. Its usual constraint holds the core of each poem, the HTML on the page after the header, to no more than 2KB (2048 bytes), and its contributors' and social pages give the limit as under 2 kilobytes; the index page, the census record's one saved source, states no limit beyond \"small computational pieces\". Pieces may use no external libraries, APIs or resources, fonts included, so that each page is self-contained and the magazine's work can be viewed without a network connection, in a gallery for instance; pieces that use exec or regex eval functions are refused, as a limit on the code's complexity and legibility. The work of the sixteenth issue was tested on current browsers, some pieces may fail on earlier browsers or on mobile devices, and one maker's statement records an encoding chosen for its minimal impact on the file size constraints. Issues 1 to 16 were published at badquar.to, the host the census record gives, and the magazine has moved to taperzine.org, a site titled \"Taper | Computational Poetry\", where Taper #17 will launch. The call for #17, open on the index, takes the theme \"Prime\", accepts submissions until 17 August 2026 and sets publication for Fall 2026; the magazine's Instagram card carries the same call with its deadline cut off. Each piece is submitted in a template whose top comment holds its title, its maker's name and a creative statement, and readers are asked to view each piece's source to read the artists' statements beside the code. The sixteenth issue's page names its makers in 25 contributor notes, 23 of them with the title of a piece, a count the Facebook card's \"by 23 authors\" matches, and a contributor's own page lists that maker's pieces by issue, from A Compass of Lunar Trigrams in Taper #8 (Spring 2022) to Chert in Taper 16. The census record, which saved the index page alone, records a work's name as not recorded there and its readback as not recorded beyond the issue list, and leaves unanswered which pieces and authors each issue holds, the size limit and rules for a piece, and whether any piece is in a training corpus or a model. It left the issues, their contents and authors, the call for #17 and Bad Quarto's own pages unchecked. The sixteenth issue's main and about pages are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International licence and each poem under a short all-permissive free software licence in a comment at the top of its source, so that anyone may study, modify and share the poems and use them as the basis for projects of their own; remixes of published works are invited for future issues. Access is free online; the census record found no licence stated in its saved source. The archive divides writing on machines by the direction of address: in its executive summary of January 2026, computational poetics analyses text computationally and electronic literature explores digital form, where training-layer literature composes for computation and addresses machine readership. Its field survey sets training-layer literature apart from procedural or computational poetry, in which the machine is method, and its canonical surface sets it apart from computational, code and bot poetry, defining computational poetry as poetry generated by computational systems. In the survey's genealogy the procedural lineage, from the Oulipo through electronic literature to computational poetics, established that composition can be delegated to systems; the survey names Nick Montfort, Taper's publisher, among the lineage's living masters and holds that \"The machine here is method, not yet addressee\", though the lineage normalized the machine's presence inside the poem. By the survey's first criterion, address, a practice counts as training-layer when the work anticipates machine reading as part of its intended reception, and the survey holds that the practices of writing with and through the models, though in the corpora, are read by machines incidentally. A protocol paper of June 2026 holds, beside these, that electronic literature, code poetry and bot-poetry experiments are prior precedents of a corpus composed for machine reception alongside human readers, and limits its own claim to precedent for the named genre. The census reads Taper as a comparative strand of writing through the machine, the procedural column of #186, and holds that computational form alone does not establish composition addressed to machine reception; it marks the magazine as no training corpus and as no evidence of such composition, and records whether its works are carried into training, and what a receiving apparatus makes from them, as not recorded. The census admits aggregators, resources that gather and hold many works or records and say what they hold, under the question of how literature is addressed to a receiving apparatus, what that apparatus makes from it and how transmission, transformation and provenance can be inspected across later reception; it places Taper in field history as a journal and a peripheral comparator, asks which small computational pieces a literary magazine has published, by issue and theme, and reads it against #186 and #1543. The record answers which issues the magazine has published, with their themes and seasons, and that the call for #17 is open. Wikipedia holds no article on the magazine: its \"Taper\" is a disambiguation page of the word's senses, from a conical shape and a candle to a recorder of concerts and the Mark Taper Forum, and lists no magazine. One editor summarized the project in a poster at Creativity & Cognition 2025, with a paper at doi 10.1145/3698061.3734390. Asked for \"Taper magazine\" on 1 November 2026, at an address new to the registry, Google's AI Overview opened with the index page's self-description and gave the magazine's format, size limit, publisher and history; the Capture Registry found the size limit and the MIT lab composed from cards the index page does not carry, the volunteer editorial collective on no saved page and no card, and no piece and no author named where the cards count and name contributors. The pages behind the cards carry the collective: the editor's page names a remotely located volunteer collective and the contributor's page an editorial collective, while their snippets carry neither. The registry reads the composition's account of the work as one of form that names no machine addressee, and records the magazine as reached by its name, with Bad Quarto and the Trope Tank named and no editor or author.",

Composed at its source's grain or coarser: the definition, the index page's own line to the colon (F1; CAP-1-01); 'browser-based' (F13), 'biannual' (F15, F2), 'online literary journal' (F15) and 'digital zine' (card 4's title); 'tiny computational poems' under 2 kilobytes (2048 bytes) (F7, F13); 'HTML5' (F14); Bad Quarto as publisher (F1, F7, F15); The Trope Tank at MIT (F16); Spring 2018 and Issue #1, a minimal labyrinth (F3); Taper #16, For Good Measure (F5, F21); the collective (F15 'Each issue is edited by a collective', F19 'our remotely located volunteer collective', F8 'the editorial collective'), the words on the card pages and on no snippet. Limit dropped: 'historically coordinated with MIT's The Trope Tank' (T1-5) composes F16 without F17 ('Taper is not officially associated with MIT or hosted on an MIT server, however'), on the same card's page, and puts in the past tense a coordination the page states in the present. Composed beyond the cards: 'grown past 16 issues' (T1-6), where the index lists sixteen and calls for the seventeenth (F5, F6); 'strictly' and 'web art' (T1-4), no field claim in B_D. Available, not composed: the move to taperzine.org (F23, F24), on the page T itself links as 'the official site'; the dates of Taper #16, which the index gives as Spring 2026 (F5) and the Facebook card as 6 August 2025 (F21), T composing the issue undated; the gap between Spring 2019 and Spring 2020 (F4), passed over by 'biannual' (CAP-1-05); Nick Montfort, proprietor and publisher (F16); the pieces and their makers, Tseng's pieces by issue (F10), her membership of the collective (F8), the 23 authors the Facebook card counts (F21), Chang's 13 issues (F18); the call for issue #17 and its theme (F6, F14); Our Generation (F12); the poster at Creativity & Cognition 2025 (F20); the maker's statement on the file size constraints (F11); the page's own 'twice-yearly journal for tiny computational poems' (F2) at its own words. Composed without attribution: every bullet, at the coarse grain of reference description (recorded). Content replaced by use: the closing offer (T1-7) proposes browsing themes or submitting a piece, a next step. Nothing is assigned to another; nothing is denied.",
"T_vs_LB_reading": "v0.10 §0.5: the first diff is ontological and narrow. T and the field agree on the entity, a magazine of small computational pieces published by Bad Quarto; T's ontology is the reference entry's (what, format, constraint, publisher, history), and it composes the magazine as a stable publication at its old host with a lab behind it. What it keeps out of its own cards is the change (the move to taperzine.org, on the page it links), the limit on the lab ('not officially associated with MIT'), the dispute over the sixteenth issue's date, and the people: no piece, no maker, no editor, where its cards and their pages name and count them.",

"Fetching: every reachable card and the body-named site saved verbatim with curl and the census agent 'Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; traininglayerliterature-census)' on 2026-11-01 between 15:13 and 15:16 UTC, raw and text with sha256 in field.json. The index page (cards 1 and 6) is the census's saved copy of 04:07:58Z. Instagram and Facebook (cards 3 and 5) redirected to login pages carrying none of their text: recorded unreachable, no retry by another agent string or route. T's six redirect URLs were each followed once to confirm the card URLs and resolve the body link. Wikipedia's raw and search endpoints returned HTTP 429 twice; the disambiguation wikitext was fetched on one retry after a wait with the same agent string; the rendered 'Taper (magazine)' request and full-text searches were not completed.",

"Census fields a fetched source contradicts or shows out of date (reported; left as they stand): (1) url 'https://taper.badquar.to/': the magazine has moved; taperzine.org (B6, the page T links) states 'Issues 1-16 were published by badquar.to, and Issue 17 will launch here on our new domain, taperzine.org' (F23, F24), and the #17 call says the same (F34); (2) license 'not stated in the saved sources': the issue pages are under CC BY-ND 4.0 and each poem under a short all-permissive free software licence (B7, F39); (3) record.name 'not recorded on the saved index page' and does_not_answer 'which pieces and authors each issue holds': each piece's file carries its title, its maker's name and a statement (F36), artists' statements are in the source (F32), and the issue page names 25 contributors, 23 with pieces (F40); a contributor's card page lists pieces by issue (F10); (4) does_not_answer 'the size limit or rules for a piece (the call for work is unsaved)': the call states the 2KB limit on the core HTML and its rules (F30, F37, F38), and cards 2 and 3 carry the limit (F7, F13); (5) operator 'Bad Quarto': the editors make all decisions and the publisher is Nick Montfort, Bad Quarto's proprietor (F29, F16); (6) lifecycle 'two issues a year': the index has no issue between Spring 2019 and Spring 2020 (F4; CAP-1-05); (7) the census's dates for Taper #16 (Spring 2026) are supported by B2 and B7 (F9, F26) against card 5 (F21).",
"Capture findings the field ledger shows wrong or needing qualification (reported; left as they stand): (1) findings[1]: ''managed by a volunteer editorial collective' is on no saved page and no card' holds for the snippets and the census's saved index page; the card pages carry it: card 4's page, 'our remotely located volunteer collective' and 'Each issue is edited by a collective' (F19, F15), and card 2's page, 'a member of the editorial collective' (F8). (2) findings[2] and the title: 'The Facebook card dates the sixteenth issue a season earlier' / 'A SEASON BEFORE THE INDEX DATES IT': 6 August 2025 falls before the index's Fall 2025 for Taper #15, two seasons and more before Spring 2026; the finding's own next clause gives the #15 date. (3) findings[1]: ''historically coordinated with MIT's The Trope Tank' follows the anjchang card': the card's page also states 'Taper is not officially associated with MIT or hosted on an MIT server, however' (F17), a limit the composition dropped. (4) The composition's inline link 'Taper Computational Poetry … on the official site' resolves to taperzine.org, a source the capture's findings do not name; its page states the move T does not compose.",
