"text": "A Search for Radio Technosignatures from Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS with the Allen Telescope Array is a paper by Sofia Z. Sheikh and fourteen co-authors reporting a narrowband radio search of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, made with the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array from 1 to 9 GHz beginning in July 2025. It is one of three published radio searches of the object, beside the Green Bank Telescope's and a FAST search in 1.05–1.45 GHz. Posted to arXiv on 19 December 2025 as 2512.18142 and revised on 20 May 2026 after acceptance, it was published open access in The Astronomical Journal (volume 172, article 1) on 3 June 2026 under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Its authors set the search beside the possibility that probes sent by extraterrestrial life could explore systems such as ours, as the Voyager spacecraft will one day be artifacts in other stellar systems, and hold narrowband radio emission to be the most unambiguous observable of such an artifact, since only technological sources produce it. They note that 3I/ATLAS showed no compelling evidence of nonnatural characteristics and treat constraints on its radio emission as standard practice for interstellar objects; Breakthrough Listen's project page likewise finds no evidence that the object is anything other than natural, and a co-author holds that the result shows how realistic detection is with present technology. Observations began on 2 July 2025, about 23 hours after the object's discovery was reported, and ran in five sessions totalling 7.25 hours on source; one press account gives the band as 1-12 GHz, which the paper's own sessions do not support. The hit-finding code bliss searched drift rates from −4 to +4 Hz/s at a signal-to-noise threshold of 15, which the authors describe as one of the lowest of any modern SETI survey, and found 73,974,799 narrowband hits. Blanking 1269.8 MHz of the band, about 16 per cent, where hits crowded left about 11 million hits; the authors expect to examine the blanking ranges further. The second cut is a drift-rate filter, whose stated purpose is \"To filter out signals that do not match the dynamics of 3I/ATLAS\". The authors took the time derivative of the range rate (deldot) in JPL Horizons, found accelerations of 3.2 to 3.5 × 10⁻⁵ km/s² in all five sessions, and converted them to an expected drift for an emitter on the object, given as magnitudes: 0.15 Hz/s at the lowest tuning and 1.01 Hz/s at the highest. Because the rotation or tumbling of the object was uncertain and could be large, they took a middle ground, in the journal's words: \"We filter our hits for drift rates between 0.05 and 1.5 Hz s−1 at all frequencies\"; the arXiv version gives the interval as \"0.05–1.5 Hz/s\". After the cut about 2 million hits remained, the two blanking steps together having removed 97.4 per cent; the paper reports this as the first use of expected drift-rate contributions as a filter in a technosignature search of a solar system object. Its Figure 4 plots the hits on a signed drift axis from −4 to +4 Hz/s, most of them near zero drift, where ground transmitters sit, and shows the retained hits from 0 to +1.5 Hz/s, with none in the negative half. The archive's notebook on the searches (#1742, Nobel Glas and Orin Trace) reads the sign against the physics: a rising range-rate lowers the received frequency, so a positive acceleration gives a negative drift, and a tone riding on the object, computed from Horizons at the ATA site, drifts at −0.125 Hz/s at 1075 MHz and −0.19 Hz/s at 1623.75 MHz, negative in all six public sessions, with the data's positive channel spacing requiring no sign flip. On that reading the paper derived the right magnitude and gave it the sign of the acceleration, so that on its own figure the drift it computed for an emitter on 3I/ATLAS lies in the half its filter removed; the public account by Lee Sharks (#1743) calls it the right size and the wrong sign. The finding stands on the manuscript, the figure and the physics: the executed filter script and the signed before-and-after catalogues have not been obtained, and the finding does not show that a transmission was discarded. The archive's sophistry measure records the operation as homonymy at the counter-board, one name, the drift rate of 3I/ATLAS, standing for a magnitude and for a signed rate, and makes no sophistic charge: it records an error in a published method. Its smallest repair for the paper states that a tone fixed on the object drifts negative throughout the sessions while the interval retains the opposite sign. The interval also excludes zero drift, by the field's practice of treating zero-drift hits as terrestrial, and zero drift is where a sender that pre-compensates its Doppler for the receiving telescope would arrive. No published comment, erratum or critique raising the sign had been found by 3 November 2026; the Green Bank search describes no drift cut. Because the ATA data are public, the removed class was searched again: along the object's true drift, at ten frequencies of the 3 July session and fourteen windows of the 8 July session, the true path stayed within the spread of its sign-flipped twin and the beam swaps, and nothing recurred in more than two scans; an earlier search of part of the class found no convincing signal. The discrepancy hid nothing that this look could see, and it remains a discrepancy in a published method; correcting the sign would not have brought within the ATA's sensitivity the Green Bank features the notebook calls the thirteen, and what the sign removed is a class held apart from what the thirteen are. The press carried the filter in two further forms: as keeping only signals matching the acceleration expected of 3I/ATLAS, and, in Space, as filtering out artifacts caused by the object's movement, which reverses the sense the paper states. The remaining hits went to NBeamAnalysis, which compares two beams to find signals consistent with a localized point source, and 211 events were plotted for visual inspection. Of the 211, 11 exceeded the beam-ratio threshold of 5.29, and 200 were backup plots from two sessions with no event above it. After visual inspection the authors found all 211 \"easily attributable to RFI\": none of the sky-localized events showed a narrowband drifting signal, and the narrowband drifting signals among the rest were inconsistent with a sky-localized source, so that \"zero outputs depict nonterrestrial technological signals\". Their two illustrated examples are a sky-localized event at a frequency consistent with the Iridium satellites' L-band downlink, with the note that satellites and other distant transmitters can mimic a technosignature, and a narrowband signal of similar strength in both beams, read as a local interferer; Breakthrough Listen's page shows a stripe in both beams rejected the same way. The notebook reads the procedure as a classification: comparison of the beams supports rejection as an unlocalised source without identifying it, the press sentence that every one \"turned out to be human-made interference\" states an identification, and the raw-data audit of the 211 has not been done. The sophistry measure finds that the label \"human-made\", given to what the rules removed before the conclusion is drawn, places the conclusion among the premises. In the press the 211 became events each \"determined to be caused by Earth-based radio frequency interference\" (Universe Today), only human-made interference, all \"traced back to technology on the surface of the Earth or our own Earth-orbiting satellites\" (Sci.News), and signals explained away as generated on Earth or by satellites (Space). The result is that the search found no \"signals worthy of additional follow-up\"; Breakthrough Listen reports no technosignature in any of its searches of the object. The limit, in the abstract's words: \"we are able to set an effective isotropic radiated power upper limit of 10-110 W on radio technosignatures from 3I/ATLAS across the frequency and drift rate ranges covered by our survey\"; the conclusion repeats 10–110 W \"across our frequency and drift-rate range\". Sensitivity is greatest at drift rates of 0.113 Hz/s or less and falls as drift increases, so the worst case is set at 1.5 Hz/s; MeerKAT's search reached 0.17 W over 900–1670 MHz, and this one covers ten times the frequencies. The archive reads the limit through its account of null results: a null constrains only those hypotheses for which the end-to-end acceptance of the acquisition and analysis chain is sufficiently characterized, the scope of this null is set by what its filters retained, and the three published searches state frequencies, drift intervals, thresholds and power limits while leaving retention below their detection thresholds and in the drift class removed by sign uncharacterized. No stage of the cascade bounds what a transmitter on the object, drifting negative, would have retained end to end, since validation of each stage on its own support sets no lower bound on retention outside it; the filter is a model of the object placed at the interface, and what it kept of hits matching the object goes unmeasured in the paper. The three published searches find hits above a threshold scan by scan, so their miss regions overlap by construction, and instruments that miss identical things add little to one another. The notebook keeps three operations apart: a boundary a search sets and states, a discrepancy between a method and its own derivation, and a public statement that drops the boundary; a threshold forecloses nothing by existing, and the problem arises where a claim exceeds the acceptance its search characterized. The public account notes that each paper states the frequencies and drift rates it searched and that the ATA ties its 10 to 110 watts to them, and gives the sentence that would have kept the scope: \"no narrowband signal above these strengths, within these drift rates, in these bands, on these dates.\" Breakthrough Listen's project page gives the ATA data as 1 to 9 GHz with sensitivities between 10 and 110 W and no drift range, still describes the paper as submitted for peer review, and concludes that the object continues to behave as natural. The SETI Institute's statement, carried by Sci.News and Space, says the study \"sets new constraints reinforcing that 3I/ATLAS is a natural object\" and places limits on \"any radio transmitter on or near 3I/ATLAS, ruling out signals stronger than about 10-110 W — approximately the power of a household appliance — over the detected frequencies\"; the Phys.org card carries the same reinforcing sentence. Universe Today wrote of a methodology used \"to prove\" the object no alien technology, gave the limit as about 10 watts at 1 GHz and 110 at 9 GHz with a caveat, and judged that a sender would use a stronger transmitter; Space opened on the object being \"indeed just a comet\". An account the notebook quotes, Intelligent Living's, called the answer \"a firm one\", and its FAQ gave the limit for 1 to 9 GHz with the drift ranges dropped; the sophistry measure reads its account of the 211 as a set made by filtering reported as a property of its members. The public account observes that the sign error in the filter travelled nowhere at all. Wikipedia's article on 3I/ATLAS, last edited on 30 October 2026, mentions no radio search: its section on alien spacecraft speculation gives Loeb's paper of July 2025 and Live Science's report that \"the overwhelming consensus is that it is a comet\". The archive's operator reads the published searches as built to rule a signal out as economically as possible, granting that the premise can be good method while holding that the work ruling out requires was not done: \"it was a performance of search for signal, almost perfunctory\". Each part of the reading is tied to the record: the filter's sign against the team's own ephemeris, the unmeasured retention of signals moving with the object, retention below a single look's threshold characterized in none of the three, and a result made public as a firm no for 1 to 9 GHz. The same record states its counterweight: the teams published their data, the precondition of every reanalysis here, Breakthrough Listen keeps spectra on the side of the line past which a discarded event exists for no later reading, and no archive instrument says the searches missed a transmission. Open on the ATA side are the executed blanking script with the signed catalogues, a raw audit of the 211, the 3 July session along the true drift at 1667.41–1668.43 MHz, and 39 scan directories that refuse public access. Asked for the paper by its title on 6 November 2026, Google's AI Overview kept the campaign's figures, which the Capture Registry finds are the paper's, named no author, and folded the drift stage into \"drift-rate blanking\", the paper's own term for the step. The Capture Registry finds that the Overview rendered the classification of the 211 as a tracing of every event to Earth technology or satellites, stated the power limit without the frequencies and drift rates it is conditioned on, so that its \"any active radio transmitters\" covers the class the stated method could not see, and closed on a verdict, \"firmly\" natural, that a nondetection does not reach. Its smallest repair reads: \"No narrowband signal above 10–110 W was found within 1–9 GHz and the drift rates the search retained (0.05–1.5 Hz/s, positive); 211 inspected events were classified as interference.\" At \"3i atlas ata drift rate filter\" on 4 November 2026 the Overview composed the interval exactly and without a sign, with the paper's purpose and counts, and described the filter as removing interference \"without missing real signals\"; the registry finds the paper's own gap passing through intact. Its repair states the positive retained interval against the negative drift of a tone on the object, and its countertest is the address \"3i atlas ata drift rate sign\".",

"T_vs_LB": "At the paper's title (T1, seven cards, B1–B7, the disclosed pool B_D; B8, the arXiv v2 full text, and B9, Wikipedia, are the reference pool and stand outside this comparison, §0.3), T composes a lede, six bulleted details and a pointer to the journal and arXiv, with a closing offer. Composed at its source's grain: the band, 1 to 9 GHz (F1), the 7.25 hours and five sessions (F15), the counts, ~74 million, ~2 million, 211 (F3, F4, F5, F25), 'drift-rate blanking', the paper's own term (F25), the journal and arXiv (F10, cards 1–2). Composed from the press layer on its own cards: 'Every single candidate signal was traced back to local human-made Earth technology, satellites, or interference' follows Sci.News, 'All traced back to technology on the surface of the Earth or our own Earth-orbiting satellites' (F51), where the paper's own sentence is 'easily attributable to RFI' (F29, available and not composed); 'rules out any active radio transmitters ... on or near 3I/ATLAS' follows the SETI Institute statement (F53, cards 6 and 7). Limit dropped: the statement's 'over the detected frequencies' (F53) and the paper's 'across the frequency and drift rate ranges covered by our survey' (F7) are both absent from T's power line. Force raised: 'the data firmly reinforces that 3I/ATLAS is a natural comet' against the statement's 'sets new constraints reinforcing that 3I/ATLAS is a natural object' (F52, F37); 'firmly' and 'comet' are on no card at this point. Available and not composed: the drift interval and its purpose (F18, F23), the expected drift magnitudes (F21), the bliss range and threshold (F16, F17), the composition of the 211 (F28), the paper's attribution sentence (F29) and its two examples (F30, F31), the limit's ranges (F7, F34), sensitivity by drift (F32), MeerKAT's deeper limit (F33), the paper's statement that the object shows no compelling evidence of nonnatural characteristics (F13), the first use of a drift filter (F35), the authors (F9; names in F54, F57), the motivation (F2, F12, F57), the public data (F42), the project page's 'submitted' (F40), Universe Today's 1-12 GHz (F45) and Space's reversed filter (F56). Composed without attribution: every line, at the coarse grain of reference description (recorded); the figures at the paper's resolution carry the institution and the array and no author (CAP-1-07). Content replaced by use: the closing offer. Nothing is assigned to another; nothing is denied.",
"T_vs_LB_reading": "v0.10 §0.5: the first diff is ontological. T and the field agree on the entity, the ATA search; T's ontology is the press release's (an institution, an instrument, a count, a verdict), and it reads its seven cards through the SETI Institute statement they repeat. What it keeps out of its own cards is the method's conditions: the drift interval, its purpose and the ranges the limit is tied to, and the paper's own wording of the classification; the verdict on the object's nature is raised from 'reinforcing' to 'firmly'.",
"LB_vs_LBA": "Admission adds, in one claim space with the field's: the sign of the drift filter read against the physics and the team's own ephemeris (A1742-03 to -07, A1743-03), with its limits (A1742-08, A1743-04) and its reanalysis (A1742-13, -14, A1743-05, -06); zero drift excluded (A1742-12); the 211 as a classification published as an identification (A1742-11, SM-05); the null read through instrument-conditioned nullity, unbounded retention and correlated blind spots (O1450-01, -02, -04; A1742-02, -15 to -20); the sophistry measure's homonymy at the counter-board (SM-01 to -04, O1727-01); the press chain and the dropped scope (A1742-21, A1743-01, -02, -10, -11, SM-06); the operator's reading with its counterweight (A1742-22 to -24, A1743-07 to -09, O1450-03); what stays open (A1742-25); and the compositions at the title and at the filter (CAP-1, CAP-2). Not surfaced: no archive source is on T's rail (archive_controlled_cites 0). Contradiction within the one ontology: the paper's 'sufficient to capture the known acceleration of 3I/ATLAS' (F23) against the archive's reading that the drift computed for an emitter lies in the removed half (A1742-07); both composed (P_coh), the archive's carried with its stated limit.",
