              "<jats:title>SUMMARY</jats:title><jats:p>Crimson clover latent virus (CCLV) was detected in five seed lots of crimson clover (<jats:italic>Trifolium incarnatum</jats:italic>) from Europe and in one from the United States of America. Ninety‐seven per cent of all crimson clover plants examined were found to be infected but were without symptoms. Keeping crimson clover plants at 32–38°C for 34 days failed to free them from CCLV. The virus was not transmitted by <jats:italic>Myzus persicae</jats:italic>, but was transmitted by inoculation of sap to <jats:italic>Chenopodium album, C. amaranticolor</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. quinoa</jats:italic>. Twenty‐four other plant species from seven families were not infected. CCLV was best propagated in <jats:italic>C. quinoa</jats:italic> in which it caused stunting and systemic chlorosis. Sap from infected <jats:italic>C. quinoa</jats:italic> was infective after dilution to 10<jats:sup>‐2</jats:sup> but not 10<jats:sup>‐3</jats:sup>, after 10 min at 60°C but not 65°C, and after 20 days at 20°C.</jats:p><jats:p>In neutral phosphotungstate, CCLV had isometric particles <jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. 26 nm in diameter with a hexagonal profile. About 20 to 80 <jats:italic>A</jats:italic><jats:sub>1cm,260</jats:sub> units of purified virus were obtained from 1 kg of infected <jats:italic>C. quinoa</jats:italic> or <jats:italic>C. amaranticolor</jats:italic> leaves by extraction in 0.5 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.5, containing 0.01 M ethylene diamine tetra‐acetate and 0.4% 2–mercaptoethanol and clarification with chloroform‐butanol followed by two precipitations with polyethylene glycol (mol. wt 6000) and several cycles of differential centrifugation. Purified virus sedimented as three components with sedimentation coefficients (s°<jats:sub>20, w</jats:sub>) of 52<jats:italic>S</jats:italic>, 101<jats:italic>S</jats:italic> and 122<jats:italic>S</jats:italic>. The 101<jats:italic>S</jats:italic> and 122<jats:italic>S</jats:italic> components had buoyant densities in CsCl of 1.438 and 1.495 g/cm<jats:sup>3</jats:sup> respectively. From these values the nucleic acid content of the 101<jats:italic>S</jats:italic> and 122<jats:italic>S</jats:italic> components was estimated to be 32–35% and 40–41% respectively. The virus contained a single protein with an estimated mol. wt of 52 000 and two single‐stranded RNA species of estimated mol. wt 1.6 × 10<jats:sup>6</jats:sup> and 2.2 × 10<jats:sup>6</jats:sup>. CCLV was serologically unrelated to 31 other morphologically similar viruses. Although its vector is unknown, CCLV seems to have affinities with nepoviruses.</jats:p><jats:p>The cryptogram of CCLV is R/1:2.2/40–41 + 1.6132–35:S/S:S/*.</jats:p>"

              "Copper-containing calcium phosphates Ca5 − z                 Y                   z                 (PO4)3Cu                   x                 OH1 − x − z −δ, where x = 0, 0.1, 0.3 and z = 0, 0.5, with an apatite structure and a partial substitution of yttrium for calcium have been synthesized by a solid-phase method at a temperature of 1100–1150°C. The compounds have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. It has been established that yttrium substitutes for calcium only in the Ca(2) position, and the occupancy of this position corresponds to the yttrium content z = 0.4–0.43. The substitution by yttrium slightly decreases the unit cell parameter of the compound (by ∼0.3%) and much more considerably (by 3%) reduces the diameter of a hexagonal channel formed by Ca(2) atoms. The predominant fraction of doping copper intrudes into hexagonal channels in both unsubstituted and yttrium-substituted calcium phosphates. Unsubstituted copper-containing phosphates are pink-crimson colored, whereas their yttrium-substituted analogues have much more pale colors from nearly white to greeny beidge. The absorption bands typical for a copper-containing calcium hydroxyapatite observed in diffuse reflectance spectra are strongly suppressed in yttrium-substituted samples probably due to a decreased average oxidation number of copper."

              "Branched nanostructures of semiconductors based on one-dimensional heterostructures have many promising applications in optoelectronics, supercapacitors, photocatalysts, etc. Here, we report a novel branched core/shell CdO/ZnO hetero-nanostructure that resembles a Crimson bottlebrush (Callistemon Citrinus) but with intriguing hexagonal symmetry. The nanomaterials were fabricated via an improved one-step chemical vapor deposition method and consist of a CdO wire as the core and ZnO as the shell. With cadmium acting as a catalyst, ZnO nanowires grow as perpendicular branches from the CdO/ZnO one-dimensional core/shell structure. The nanostructures were characterized with X-ray diffraction scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A homogeneous epitaxial growth mechanism has been postulated for the formation of the nanostructure. The materials show a broad and strong absorption ranging from visible to ultraviolet and a better photoelectrocatalytic properties in comparison to pure ZnO or CdO. Our synthetic strategy may open up a new way for controlled preparation of one-dimensional nanomaterials with core/shell heterostructure, which could find potential applications in solar cells and opto-electrochemical water-splitting devices."

Description Body bright crimson. Basal plate more or less hexagonal, 5.67 µm long, 8.00 µm wide (index 0.71), with rows of thorns on its dorsal surface. Jaws 20.00 µm long, with one pair of teeth and with relatively long, straight rostral apophyses (apophysis index 0.50). Discussion Sterrer (1998) discussed the cosmopolitan distribution, variability, frequent sympatry, and possible tendency of H. ruberrima and H. rosea to hybridize. The two species are nevertheless fairly distinguished by jaw apophysis index (0.50 or more in H. ruberrima, 0.50 or less in H. rosea) and details of the basal plate (with dorsal thorns in H. ruberrima, without thorns but with longitudinal ridges in H. rosea). Family Pterognathiidae Sterrer, 1972 Pterognathia sica Sterrer, 2001 (Fig.4.1–4.3) Material Two juveniles from sample SI 16. Distribution NE Australia (Sterrer 2001). Description Colorless­translucent. The larger of the juveniles was 1150 µm long and 45 µm wide (index 25.5), with a rostrum 150 µm long and 30 µm wide (index 5.00). Neither of the two specimens had a basal plate. The jaws are slender, and 18 µm long in both specimens; with long, curved rostral apophyses, dorsal cristae, and a small, transverse­oval symphysis. There are 5 long, ventral teeth and 3–4 shorter dorsal teeth. Discussion Although the jaws of the NZ specimens are considerably shorter than those of Australian specimens (26.00 µm), they otherwise agree well with the original description of P. sica, the only known species in the genus Pterognathia that consistently lacks a basal plate.",

(off Ninety Mile Beach) continuous to Abrolhos Islands off WA (Loisette Marsh, pers. comm.); Bass Strait; Tas.; under rocks; 0–29 m (molecular confirmation for Flinders (Vic.) to Busselton (WA)). Remarks. The lectotype of Asterina gunnii and the two paratypes of Patiriella brevispina seen in this study do not exhibit any significant morphological differences and in particular have single stout subambulacral spines per plate and very short actinal interradial spines. These two diagnostic characters were used by Clark (1938) to distinguish his new species. Clark (1938) also considered the “consistent deep purple to brownish-crimson colour and orange tube feet” of P. brevispina to be diagnostically reliable. This observation is confirmed and specimens with these characteristic colours consistently exhibit the morphological diagnostic characters of A. gunnii. Dartnall (1970) followed H.L. Clark (1938) when designating and describing the lectotype of A. gunnii, and noted that paired subambulacral spines distinguished P. gunnii from P. brevispina. Dartnall (1970) then considered the lectotype of A. gunnii to be exceptional in having single subambulacral spines. The lectotype of A. gunnii (R = 24 mm) and paratypes of P. brevispina (up to R = 20 mm) are similar in size, and are small specimens of A. gunnii (up to R = 56 mm). On the morphological evidence P. brevispina is considered here to be a junior synonym of A. gunnii. Hart et al. (1997) and Byrne et al. (1999) found from molecular evidence that P. ‘brevispina’ specimens from eastern Australia (Mornington Peninsula, Vic.) and Western Australia (Perth) were closely related. Eastern and Western Australian specimens of P. ‘brevispina’ were found to be conspecific in this study. Byrne (1995, 1996), Byrne and Cerra (1996), and Long and Byrne (2001) have reported on the reproductive and developmental biology of P. gunnii (as P. ‘brevispina’). The combination of characters which distinguishes P. gunnii from other six-rayed species of Patiriella is: consistent uniform dark crimson to reddish brown colour; orange tube feet; larger maximum size; prominent papular spaces with numerous papulae and secondary plates; noticeably spinous abactinal spinelets; predominantly single thick subambulacral spines per plate; and very short thick actinal interradial spines. No evidence was found to confirm the occurrence of P. gunnii in NSW, or the depth of 39 m reported by Rowe and Gates (1995, as P. ‘brevispina’).",

              "The bulk and surface collective charge density excitations of metallic and semiconducting superlattice structures are studied. Because of the new periodicity along the axis of an infinite superlattice, these plasma modes form bands which satisfy Bloch's theorem. The dependence of the band structure on the material parameters is investigated. For finite or semi-infinite systems novel surface plasmons can occur. The coupling of the bulk and surface collective modes to external probes is reviewed."
