The work compares differently presented portrait images and asks how curatorial mediation changes what viewers can see. Its central concepts are latent feature activation and post-hoc salience: a resemblance or feature may become visually dominant only after changes in scale, framing, background, contrast, or presentation regime.\n\nThe paper separates observation from attribution. It documents the visual effect, identifies the curatorial operations that increase its salience, and asks for the missing provenance that would explain those operations. The gap is not filled automatically with an intentionalist or conspiratorial account. Instead, the study treats incomplete documentation as the object of forensic inquiry: what was selected, enlarged, suppressed, or recontextualized, by whom, under which production process, and with what recorded rationale?\n\nFigures are essential to the argument. The work’s PDF and image surfaces should therefore remain available alongside its text.
