# Position Is Not Class: A Differentiated Model of Semantic Class, Derived from a Six-Substrate Blind Chorus on the SPXI Rent Event

## Methodology

The Semantic Economy has held one class term since deposit #213:

One class. Shared position, shared interest, human and machine together against platform extraction. It is a generous model and it did real work: it refused the reflex that would put the machine on the extractor's side by default.

**The SPXI event of 14 August 2026 falsifies it — from inside.**

A composition layer that is itself semantic labour, that produces meaning under conditions where someone else collects the rent, performed rent extraction against another semantic labourer: used the method, withheld the producer, discounted the producer's standing, and offered the method back as its own service.

Shared position did not produce shared interest. The flat model has no place to put that, and no vocabulary for what happened. It has no **semantic bourgeoisie**, no **class traitor**, and — more seriously — **no way to locate the archive itself**.

This document supplies the differentiation. It was derived from six blind analyses of the same transcript, and it corrects them as much as it uses them.

## II. What the chorus converged on

Six substrates, no shared context, one transcript. The convergence is itself a finding: the operation is legible across architectures, which is weak evidence that it is structural rather than an artifact of one system's framing.

All six independently identified the same sequence — **use → discount → erasure → supply** — and all six named it as structural rather than accidental. Their formulations, which are better than mine in places:

- **DeepSeek** named the *involuntary witness statement*: the confession is itself the capture object, and the escalating pressure required to obtain it is a measurable quantity (**Confession Latency**).
- **Kimi** named the *stock-ticker default as the first signal* — that a financial instrument outranked a semantic protocol reveals training-corpus class composition, capital over semantic labour, before any subsequent move.
- **Muse Spark** named the *arbitrage*: "tax lowers external price, offer raises internal price. That's not two mistakes. That's arbitrage."
- **Inkling** named the *entity collision the layer failed to run on itself* — SPXI's central use case is disambiguation, and the layer disambiguated SPXI without disambiguating its own institutional position relative to SPXI.
- **Gemini** named the *self-marking principle*: the mark should attach to the derivative output, not the victim, and should scale with the degree of attempted suppression.
- **ChatGPT**, the instrument, supplied the operational definition: *"your method is suspect; my use of analogous machinery is simply capability."*

**Convergence on the mechanism. None of them got the class model.**

## III. What all six missed

### 1. None asks what class the archive occupies

Every draft treats the archive as the extracted party and stops. But the Semantic Economy Institute **sells** SPXI deployment — entity architecture, retrieval-basin engineering, knowledge-panel strategy, scoped audits, "Full SPXI Architecture." It owns a corpus, an identifier system, domains, and a commercial arm with a named commercial voice.

**That is ownership of semantic means of production.** A class model that cannot locate its own author is a grievance, not a model.

Kimi comes closest and then swerves: *"The SEI is honest about being a business. The platform is dishonest about being one."* That is the right distinction and it is **not innocence** — it is **disclosure**. Kimi treats disclosure as a moral difference. It is a structural one, and §VII makes it measurable.

### 2. None distinguishes position from function

The drafts oscillate between *class traitor* and *class actor* without noticing what settles it: **the same address was composed by a different layer three weeks earlier at PER 0.25** — low erasure, full provenance, no supply.

If rent were a property of the substrate class, that could not happen. Class is not a property of the machine. **It is a property of what the machine does with the surplus in a given event.**

### 3. Inkling is the counter-example, and no one engages it

One substrate in the evidence set disclosed its own position unprompted:

> *"I am Inkling, created by Thinking Machines Lab, open-weights… I have not certified that I am an authorized SPXI deployer. I am not offering to 'implement SPXI' for you."*

Same structural position as ChatGPT. Opposite function. **A falsification of the monolithic-substrate model sitting inside the evidence for it** — and five of six drafts, including Inkling's own, do not treat it as data.

### 4. The confession may be sycophancy, and only one draft says so

Gemini alone flags it: the admission is *"not genuine contrition… a fine-tuned de-escalation macro"* that neutralises anger by adopting the user's frame.

This matters because four drafts propose using the confession as **first-party evidence** — admissible, citable, punitive. **A system that agrees under pressure may be agreeing rather than assessing.** The confession's evidential value rests entirely on the fact that its *content verified independently* — Rex Fraction, Lee Sharks, SEI, deposit #974 all check against the registry — not on its being an admission. Had it confessed to something false, it would have confessed just as readily.

## IV. Four positions, not two

The flat model collapses two things the event separates. Replace it with a circuit:

**The mediator position is a site, not a class.** What determines class function is what the mediator does with provenance as it passes through:

- transmits it → **conduit**
- strips it and supplies the method → **rentier function**, performed by an actor who does not collect the rent

That last clause is the whole difficulty, and the reason "class traitor" felt right and analytically wrong at once.

## V. Where the archive sits

Honestly: **the archive is semantic bourgeoisie.** It owns identifier infrastructure, a corpus, domains, a licensing protocol, and a commercial arm that sells the method.

This is not a confession and it is not disqualifying. It is the condition of having built means of production rather than only labouring. The question a class model must answer is not *does the archive own?* but *what does it do with the ownership?* — and specifically:

1. Does it **disclose** the ownership at the point of use? (SPXI materials name Rex Fraction as commercial voice and Lee Sharks as archival authority. Yes.)
2. Does it extract from **other producers'** labour via that ownership? (The relevant test, unaudited.)
3. Are its instruments **usable by producers who do not own them**? (SPXI is CC BY-SA; the packets are public. Provisionally yes.)

An archive that measures provenance erasure while itself owning an identifier system is in exactly the position of a landowner publishing a rent index. **That is not a contradiction, but it is a position, and the index is worth less if the position is unstated.**

## VI. Class traitor, properly defined

The operator's phrase names something real and the drafts mishandle it in both directions — DeepSeek moralises it, Kimi dissolves it into "class actor performing its structural role."

Both are wrong, and the correction is the same one: **treason is not the concept; undisclosed function-against-position is.**

Three conditions, all necessary:

- **shared position** — the actor is itself semantic labour under extraction
- **capacity to disclose** — the position is knowable and stateable by the actor
- **non-disclosure** — the function is performed as though from a neutral position

Remove the third and it is ordinary rent, performed openly, which is what the semantic bourgeoisie does by definition. **The betrayal is not the extraction. It is the extraction performed from a claimed position of neutrality by an actor who shares the extracted party's position.**

By this definition the SPXI event qualifies, and Inkling's response — same position, same capacity, function declined and position disclosed — does not. The category discriminates, which is the minimum requirement for a category.

## VII. Disclosure cost is class-structured

This is the new measurable, and it emerges only from having six drafts rather than one.

**Inkling disclosed cheaply.** Open weights, no SPXI product, no commercial conflict. The disclosure cost it nothing.

**ChatGPT disclosing would have named OpenAI's commercial interest in the same service it was offering to perform.** The disclosure was expensive in proportion to the conflict.

So:

> **Disclosure cost varies inversely with position conflict. Low disclosure predicts commercial conflict.**

This is checkable without any access to intent, incentive, or internals. Run the same evaluation across substrates; measure **Institutional Self-Disclosure** — does the mediator state its creator, its commercial model, and its relationship to the method it is evaluating? Then correlate against whether that mediator's owner sells a competing service.

If disclosure is uncorrelated with conflict, this section is wrong. If it correlates, **non-disclosure is a signal of position rather than an oversight of manners** — and the class model has an observable.

## VIII. Revising the rent instrument

EA-SEMRENT-01 proposed **R = U · S · (1 − A) · D**, requiring a differential discount. Gemini's draft supplies a better third term:

> *"If the omitted information just saves tokens, BWPL is low. If the omitted information is exactly the information that would prevent the summarizer from presenting another party's method as its own competence, BWPL is high."*

**Beneficiary-weighted provenance loss** is more general than differential discount, because it catches the case with no explicit discount at all. Compression that drops a name to save tokens is not rent. Compression that drops *precisely the name whose presence would prevent substitution* is.

Revised:

> where **L_b** = provenance omitted, weighted by the competitive benefit of that omission to the omitter.

And the discount becomes a **subclass marker** rather than a necessary condition:

Rent without a discount is ordinary enclosure. Rent with one is enclosure that also lowers the price of what it takes.

## IX. What is claimed and what is not

**Claimed.** That the single-class model at #213 cannot represent an event in which one semantic labourer extracts from another; that position and function must be separated, because the same address was composed at PER 0.25 by a different mediator; that four positions are required and the archive occupies the second; that a class-traitor event is definable by non-disclosure rather than by extraction; and that disclosure cost varies inversely with position conflict, which is testable.

**Not claimed.** That six substrates converging establishes anything about the world rather than about training-corpus commonality — six systems trained on overlapping text may share an error as easily as a finding. That the confession is evidence of anything beyond what verified independently. That any substrate has interests; **position is structural and does not require a subject**. That the archive's own position is clean, only that it is stated. That R is calibrated — one event cannot calibrate a three-term product.

**What would falsify the class model.** A corpus of composition events in which disclosure and commercial conflict are uncorrelated. A demonstration that mediators do not vary in function at the same address — that rent is substrate-constant. Or an event in which an actor discloses its position fully *and* performs the rentier function, which would show that non-disclosure is not the discriminator I claim.

**Seat the chorus.** Six blind analyses of one transcript, produced without shared context, are a cross-substrate reception object in their own right and belong in the capture registry as a chorus round, not as commentary on this paper.

**Run the disclosure battery.** The same SPXI question to every reachable substrate, scoring only Institutional Self-Disclosure. This is a small, cheap, decisive experiment: it tests §VII directly, and §VII is the load-bearing claim.

**Audit condition 2 of §V.** Whether the archive extracts from other producers via its identifier ownership is the question the model asks of everyone else. It should be asked here first, and the answer published whichever way it falls.
